Try moving your database file (files.db) and letting the index rebuild your library. This will probably take a while. Move files.db, then open ableton and let it run. Depending on the size of your sample library, it'll prob be anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour.

If it doesn't work, you can always move the file back into the folder... or just keep the new DB file since it's been rebuilt anyway. If it does work, you can delete the old file.

I don't know where the database file is on Mac. Someone else will have to help you with that. Or google it, I'm sure it'll turn up. On windows it's in Appdata. Maybe there's some Mac equivalent, if that helps.

So,I'm coming from Presonus Studio oNE 3 Where I can load whole hard drives and load into my library. I recently removed them from places. Should I reinstall them, or should I go with another option like individual folders? I just have so many files and loops.

Glad it worked. It's like I said... you gotta leave Live open for a while. Like, a long time if you have a big library. Or at least Ableton Index needs to be running in the task manager. It's rebuilding your database. Open Live, watch a TV show and come back, and you'll have your sounds.

I mean... it's up to you. I don't see separate drives vs separate folders on one drive being a major factor. If anything I imagine it has the potential to increase speed, seeing as you wouldn't be relying on the read/write speed of a single drive. However I'm just spitballing here. I know fuckall about computers and the litany of computer brainiacs on here who I've leaned on for tech support will testify to that.

Just understand that the larger your library, the longer it will take Live to rebuild it entirely. If you have hundreds of gigs you might need it to run an hour, maybe even two before your whole library shows up. The whole point of ableton index and having a database at all is so that you can search your stuff with zero delay. Lots of people have complained about it running and taking up memory/cpu. Personally I think its a great feature. The cpu hit is negligible and the benefits are tangible.

BTW I'm coming from Studio One as well. Different DAW switch, where in my case I've pretty much always produced in Live, but I couldn't live with S1's handling of cpu resources. I switched to Cubase for my tracking/mixing/mastering. Enjoy getting the actual potential of your processor. Live handles cpu MUCH better than S1 in my experience. Your mileage may vary depending on your system though, I guess.

    ^ Yeah okay guy.

No DAW is bad. Each one has its own philosophy and its own set of power users that make it look like an A++ program. Just look at FL Studio. Universally described as a "toy" for a long time. Then Seamless and others popped up and showed everyone what could be done with it, and its fantastic native plugins, if you have the skills.

This is the culprit. If u search in the ableton live instruments sections, there arent so much like in the sound section. And you cant do anything but maybe buying the new generation of SSD (2,5GB/s transferrate) and move your sounds there. Everyone has this small delay like you. And you cant expect from a system that scans/searches 100000000 files in a second :) and if you have your sounds on a physical HD on a laptop (which are 10x slower than desktop HDs) and maybe also if the power save function of the HD is activated via OS that you have to wait, because first ur HD must get power to wake up, then the motor has to spin up the HD-plates, then the reading-head has to move to find the sectors and start searching. Consider these options ;)

i may have to start over and figure this out.. well, I'm gonna use the index killer app because my 1tb drive is fully scanned but the thing that is happening to the above in the video is happening again. I'm gonna try to use that first if it doesn't work I'm getting rid of the files.db again and figure my approach

the problem is, people storing to much in their sample folders, just reduce the amount and ableton will scan it in a few minutes.
(i have like 10000 small files in my folder, one shot samples, around 1500 midi files, some sound effects, scanning is quite fast on my SSD)
then the search will work just fine.

If you really need to keep massive amounts of samples but don't want the constant scanning you could just not add the folder location to Live's Places and drag and drop your files directly with a file browser.

Theres a setting in options.txt to "relax" the scanning.

Add this to reign it in some

    -_RelaxFileManagerSearch

I also have the vst scanning disabled at start up and do it manually so it doesn't crash from new plugins when Im trying to load projects. Also speeds up initial loading.

    -NoVstStartupScan

I have a 2tb drive dedicated for samples in my live folders

I do have some lag though, Ive just accepted it
