Racism and stupidity go hand in hand and is in every part of the world. It is inescapable, but you can choose to ignore it or do something about it when it is in your vicinity. Just say that's racist and it usually calms it down. Stupid people will just ignore you and continue but it usually quells the bastard until they go away.

I'm Indian (not dot, not feather, just love) and my son's mom is part Basque, part German so we're all kinds of colors. Which I personally find all kinds of beautiful.

All these negative connotations being placed will continue until we simply choose to not propagate the idea anymore. Long, fucking impossible journey, right? Just accept and do it on a personal level, with conviction. Your kids'll see and do the same. And theirs. Till eventually the only ones in the minority will be those that are rightly so. Meaning the hateful beings with only poison to spout.

You all know that saying that perception is reality? Racism is alot like that. Like beauty, almost all of it is in the eye of the beholder.
I say almost because some of it is just pure, explicit hate. Politically correct or not.

@thantrax I can understand your need to bring this topic to attention. I just pray for a day we can all embrace the things that make us different instead of use it as some base for segregation.

Unfortunately, in England your hypothesis just doesn't hold up. The south is far richer than the north financially. In terms of culture and sport we're far more advanced though.

The trouble is everyone has a view that is different. Everyone feels strongly about it and people are willing to kill in it's name. Therefore how can anyone win an argument about it in an online debate. There are no winners, just different degrees of loser.

I didn't wanna win over anybody.. I was expressing how most Italians feel about being immigrants: inappropriate, thanks to all the stereotypes. It is obvious that you might feel tense: you feel judged by the natives, and episodes like these don't help you feel comfortable in other countries. That's why this topic has been a thing in Italy. It's the most common point of view. Respect that. We make mistakes, but people with prejudice make mistakes too.

yes racism exists, everywhere. it doesn't mean it's par for the course and it doesn't mean that attempts to eradicate it and educate people isn't something to be ignored either. most racism is also just plain misanthropy, i know people who hate EVERYONE and blame anyone for their woes, it just fits sometimes to justify that behaviour and call it racism. a previous poster mentioned wales, well that's funny because if you go to the south you will discover a great diversity of race , the big problem there is not race it is rich v poor. most racists i encounter are 'lazy' racists and act like they do out of habit. it doesn't take long to show people that and if they remain obdurate about it, well they are beyond change. remove the straw man and talk about what is the biggest problem which is the economic divide. imo.

 

The whole discussion started with a highlighted text about the splitting of Italians into 4 different classes. Nobody said something about the separation of the Kurdish also into 4 classes nor the Luba into 3. thantrax, why do you only care for the Italians and not for the whole mankind? Looks like some kind of "stupidity, racism" to me....

Italians from Naples, Italy - and the surrounding areas - do not like Italians from the North. Italians from Naples consider themselves 'Napalitano', more than 'Italian'. It's a pride thing. This is not racism. That's probably why there is a category for just that. Whoever created that 'chart' obviously knew something about this demographic.

 

As a German I grew up in a country that was build up again after WW II. A country that took every chance to prevent propaganda, dogmatic, hate speech, demagogue, populism, fascism - forever! Our "Grundgesetz" is the strong base against all of this. The very first sentence of the very first article is "Human dignity shall be inviolable".
Or the third article, sentence 3: "No person shall be favoured or disfavoured because of sex, parentage, race, language, homeland and origin, faith, or religious or political opinions. No person shall be disfavoured because of disability".
After the war, we needed a lot of help. Therefore, Germany is a land with one of the highest shares of immigrants in the world.

What I mean is, I grew up without even knowing the word "racism". I had friends I liked. I never cared about anything else than if I like a person. I didn't even notice if the parents of someone came from turkey, poland, italy, africa, india, or wherever else. I am with @Herr Durr posting Morgan Freeman: There was no need to talk about racism. Just as he explained, I know the people by their names, not by their skin color, religion or disability.

I therefore agree wholeheartedly to the quote!

But I also do notice if something is real racism or just "felt racism". And in this case we have a list of languages that is furthermore divided into dialects, where those schools experienced a difference in difficulties. Nothing more. That has nothing to do with racism!

Not everything that makes a distinction is racism.

 

Try living in the USA and, despite being a white hetero male (supposedly the slice o' the demographic pie enjoying all the privilege and doing all the oppressing and committing all the so-called "hate"-crimes), being somehow "different" in a way on which no one can put their finger but is tantamount to an odor unlike their own, and therefore being harrassed out of or wrongfully fired from jobs, dumped-on by members of social groups, and even kicked-out of one's own family at age 17. All this blabla "diversity," "tolerance," "inclusiveness," "equality," and "individualism" – and I can't even be myfuckinself with impunity.

 

Yes @stevitch! You actually get it. Media here is trying to start a race war. You just need to dig a little deeper and find out why.
