I always find it amusing when my dad tells me that yet another guy with a South Asia accent called him in an effort to save his computer from the nasty virus he picked up on the internet . Why? Because my father does not own a computer, let alone subscribe to an internet provider.

Where's the incentive in propagating such deceptive crap if nobody ever fell for it? For every x number of people who simply ignore it there's always one who takes the bait. And there's a ton of people on the internet. Not everyone is tech savvy, some are just too damn naive to believe there are bad people out there trying to cheat them.

The trash that makes these deceptive messages can go drive off a cliff for all I care. Meanwhile, the ransomware propagators like those behind Cryptowall should be crucified on live TV. The crooked bankers on top don't deserve death, it is too nice. They should be confined in a gated village to live out the rest of their lives in abject poverty, for the whole world to see. Kind of like that dumb TV show, Big Brother. Broadcast worldwide.

I am a contractor and do onsite upgrades and installations for Best Buy, Dell, HHGregg etc. When the GeekSquad fails they send us in. Our inside joke is "When the geek squad fails, call us the nerd herd" More than once I've gone to an old persons home and was shocked to find out they paid 100 bucks to a PayPal account from the phone number on their screen. Usually for a 3 year subscription to some masquerading malware. And after they paid and downloaded whatever fix, It usually clobbered their systems and made them unusable. Once while I was decrapifying and cleaning up a PC the phone rang and it was some guy with an indian accent asking the customer why he was uninstalling their software and then tried to lowball him for more money and a cheaper annual rate. I immediatly asked to speak to him and shut him down Faoki style. These guys are ruthless and use scare tactics to prey on little old grandmas

They truly have no shame. I have talked to some on the phone, and told them as much. What an utterly pathetic way to make a living. What is mind boggling is that there are powerful financiers out there raking in trillions using fraud, deceit, and fear. Preying on the weak is the most shameful way to live, yet we glorify and protect these people. It is a sick world.

 

ONe of my favorite ones was the one that used your webcam to snap pics and showed them on your screen with an official looking FBI symbol and pay scam. I had a client call me and have me come over immediately. It snapped a picture of him rolling up some weed and he really thought the feds were coming for him. LoL. The only one that scares me is the cryptowall. Ive only seen it once out in the field. I couldn't help her unfortunately

 

....or be wary of the sites you goto. For instance, stay off the chinese midget porn sites...LoL

Calling the cops with issues when browsing a warez download site - is there something like a virtual darwin award?

 

UBLOCK .. GREASEMONKEY ... etc .. and VPN addons .. makes you happy

 

Just use Linux and you can just sit and relax... and LOL [sorry!] at people still trying to use Windows for browsing, having to install all these security programs, anti this and that, and still nothing is safer than using some other OS. Yes, I also mean OS-X, and BSDs, too. The less popular the better.

Windows is strictly for audio, for the time being. If you're using Windows for Internet you're just asking for trouble.

 

You just spooked the crap out of me by stating something that scares the crap out of you. What in tarnation is a "cryptowall"? I'll just keep my back to the corner of this room I'm in with my eyes on the door and a baseball bat in my hand until you tell me what it is!

 

never, ever use your workstation PC as a FAP-station (for searching porn and stuf...), also never ever open anything that pops-out on the internet, when you are downloading stuf always be sure what it is before opening it, don't open suspicious URL's (you can always assume what adress it is from URL, read!), don't open e-mails without subject and with stupid ones (like: VIAGRA ON SALE... XD) and without any antivirus you are safe as anyone with them (also one more thing: always use one antivirus software, because more of them could only make confusion and then your PC will be more vulnerable than without any of them)

 

is it so hard to learn how to backup an image of yours OS using something like Acronis, and the restore it when nessesery.

The only software I'm using to protect my data from beeing hacked or infected in the last 15 years is freeware and is called OS X. So far no intruder, no virus, no bot, no worm, no motherfucker even entered my livingroom in cyberspace. Maybe I'm lucky or maybe my used OS is a user friendly OS. I kicked Windows long ago. Never had the feeling that something is missing.
