Found out about this when i was searching for DIY hardware stuff.
Amazing and most of all AFFORDABLE.

Colour is a new format for analog audio gear designed for and by the DIY community. We took our favorite sounding analog circuits and put them on modules that are small, affordable, and swappable.
The Colour format consists of Colours and Palettes:

Colours are ultra-compact, pluggable analog circuit blocks that impart various types of analog color. Check out our ever-growing selection of Colours below.

Palettes provide controls, power, and support circuitry for Colours. We currently offer the Colour 500 Palette and CP5 Mic Preamp with Colour.

Thanks so much for this. Saved it in my list, specially the saturation.

    No problem my friend :)

  7. It might have even been enough to use the Flea 47 positioned optimally to get a great drum sound.

Nice marketing, but it is a no go for me as I always shy away from proprietary components. I believe that it limits your choices if you need to snap these little boards onto just their 500 format boxes. There are a few really great DIY companies offering similar choices with probably better components such as this one I know a bunch of pros use to go where they need to go, https://seventhcircleaudio.com.

edit: Sorry for the rant. This might be just the thing for someone looking to get into DIY and could be a stepping stone to bridge from their low end to some kit with higher quality components and with a more refined sound. And on a side note, any preamp, be it the most humble to the most grand is really the last thing on the list when it comes to recording in regard to quality of reproduction. The performance, the mic, mic placement and the room itself all come before the pre in importance.

With a huge market of digital plugins this is something different, refreshing.
Its nice that you can feel it,twist it,no need for the mouse, just the pure analog aspect of this makes it fun to work with.

  9. Absolutely, twisting knobs is great as well as having choices outside of the digital realm. As part of an analog chain coming into the DAW we all need something to bump up the signal, and how we do that amounts to personal taste; clean with the option to dirty it up later down the line or make choices in regards to the degree and kind of color or dirt we throw at the source from the start.

Remember, If going the Color route, after buying the box to snap the boards into and installing all the resisters, capacitors and other bits you will need depending on your goal, you are still going to need to buy a lunchbox. The API lunchbox that they are using in the video will run you approximately $100 per channel, about $600 US for the ability to use the 500 format. You can buy smaller capacity boxes too as 500 format boxes are made with as few as two spaces and on upwards to ten space units. You can spend a bit more and have a lunchbox with Phantom Power, a master Section, summing capability, and built-in noise-filtering. Of course you will pay substantially more coinage for these options.

I've been really interested in trying these out but the fact I have to get the lunchbox to has put me off. Great if you've already got one but I begrudge paying more for the box than the thing I put in it!

Get your order in quick whilst the USA is still massively embarrassed by how its Olympic swimmers behaved in Rio.

If you enquire about an order and they refuse to deliver to Brazil then play the:

'So you think we're all criminals that would dress up as a police officer in order to rob people?'

card in order to shame them into accepting your order. Be quick though, you won't be able to play on this sympathy for very long before they go back to thinking everyone south of the Mexican border is a cocaine fuelled criminal.

Grab a LINDELL 506. I've got one of those and a 510. Cheap price. Solid build.

  17. Depending on which units you wish to fill in the blanks of a 500 lunchbox, you can save a bunch because 500 sized units cost less to produce as they have no power supply and the cost of screening and the box itself is considerably less. The other side of the coin is when a 500 needs be double wide which adds to the factor of two in means of space costs. For instance the Warm Audio Tonebeast is double wide so it is more expensive than the rack version as the 500 is only about 50 bucks cheaper.

In ending, the cost of going the lunchbox route in my mind has much less to do with cost than it does with portability. They cleverly named the format "Lunchbox" for good reason. It has a handle and can easily be taken from session to session with much more ease than a 19" rack with similar hardware. Another benefit is that all you need is one electrical wall outlet. Easy peasy, boom, hit record, collect a Grammy and smile as you happily skip home from the bank with two pro recording channels in one hand and the keys to your Tesla in the other.
