So I'm developing a sound that I like to think is pretty original. I've been told my music lacks some kind of identity, not sure what that means. So here's my new song in all it's glory. If you where to pidgeon hole this into a genre, which do you think it is?

Your Track has a good groove.
I'd say it sounds like EDM if you would use the right sounds.
Right now it sounds like made on a Korg M1 from the 80th (unfortunately this sound never got established, since it doesn't sound any good)
    Cheers

I'd say it sounds like you don't know what you're talking about. EDM:rofl:Sounds nothing like that media hyped aberration of a genre.
It's far too funky for that.
The Korg M1 was, and always will be a bloody good synth, and if it was made on it, then fair play.

I would say that it has a house/disco feel to it, and by looking at the title, I think that was possibly the intention. One small criticism is the sax sometimes feels out of place. Maybe have it play for a shorter time period between the funky parts.

Take no offence in what im saying as its not my intention...
Its quite clearly a generic light house//dance number...
To me it sounds spot on if it were background music of some kind , "obviously for something energetic"
Say in a commercial for tv/radio or that kinda thing...
Im reluctant to call it musak because its not that dribble...
But i do feel it could maybe get used in a similarish manner....
btw Bigups to the M1Dance piano preset we all should know/love/remember
    Not dnb...no no

First, it is really excellent. Then I see very good people dance to this compo in a dance hall.

So to date, I would say between 80 and 2016

I wouldn't pigeon hole it into any particular genre, because it doesn't obviously really sound like anything else. Whoever is telling you it 'lacks identity' has got it the wrong way around, there's thousands of tracks released every week that all sound similar, whilst yours stands out from the crowd. It's an individual sound and you should keep trying to sound that way rather than attempting to fit in. I particularly like the whole woozy, detuned, feeling slightly drunk sound, especially the sax.

I love the M1, in the 90's it was everywhere, it is the sound of that era. There are much better synths out there, but just because it was so prominent in the 90's, I just love using it.

I never take offense, lifes too short plus I asked for the oppinions, I have to expect the results :) I'm just glad you all listened so thanks for that, it's definitely the style I'm going for. Just need to refine it a little.

Sounds like 80s funky pop to me. Maybe with some tech roots just because of the drums.
    Sounds nice, though.

    Yep M1, I love the M1.

I agree about the sax, I put it in as an afterthought and wish I hadn't. I had someone say it was out of key in parts, I don't hear it myself but you aren't the only one to mention it.

What I meant about the sax is that it goes for too long. I feel that if you shorten the duration and have shorter riff type clips, which you can slot into natural groove of the song.
