Most producers I know have some kind of pre/mid/post-session ritual, what's yours?

 

Before, I had to knock on wood. Hence the phrase: touch wood so that everything goes well.

 

Mine involves a lot of crying and masturbation. Usually in that order.

 

Mental Break time= Audiosex baby.

 

I crawl into a dark, quiet corner. Then assume the fetal position, and drink a bottle of Black Jack. Three days later, I resume working.

 

Not a ritual, per se – more like the impetus to clean the bathroom because I can smell the toilet from the bedroom, or the motivation to clean the house resulting from having stubbed my toe on something mislaid on the floor and thrown into a rathful rage to "set things right around this joint," if not the desperate compulsion to run out and buy a roll of toilet paper at the corner store because I'm out of it and "she" is supposed to be coming over in 15 minutes.

 

Lots of joints.

Rum, weed, and procrastinating

I usually soundtrip out to the song I finish, immediately after I finish it. I produce only for my own ears. Since the trashy music industry can't give me anything nice half the time.

 

Pre: clean the desk, set faders busses and master channel to unity gain with a tone generator. Go for a slash.
Mid: save project and create a backup. Bounce down stems to stereo tracks. Create new project and import bounced audio. Mix & master.

Post: make recording report, zero all outboard gear, clean up studio so it's ready for the next guy. Bugger off and have a vape.

Post-post: ponder on what it might have been like if I'd stuck to a real job instead of pissing around with sound & vision for a pittance of money.

Post-post-post: wonder if it's night or day outside my windows. Have another slash. Grab some zzzzzzzzzz's.
