i have been trying and trying to recreate that kavinsky style long low pass reso bass.
i just cannot seem to get it right especially with the envelope.

Well it's a Moog bass, so either google "Moog Bass Tutorial", or if you have the Arturia V Minimoog, it will be one of the presets I would think.

    Lowpassed saw as sub bass.
The 16th-note bass is a lowpass filter enveloped (pretty fast decay) saw + pulse wave with some resonance turned up.

The long note (that you are probably referring to) is also a saw + pulse wave with lowpass filter envelope, but has a longer filter envelope decay and higher resonance. Tune the pulse an octave below the saw.

Try the free TAL NoiseMaker VSTi (PC) and pick preset #11:"ARP Demotrack ARP" as a starting point. Tune the pulse osc an octave down. Adjust filter envelope decay, play with resonance and adjust amount/range parameter (labeled "cont.").

this. most definitely. the way the filters and envelopes interact are very specific to the instrument, so while you may be getting close to the sound, nothing will compare to using the appropriate synth, whether softsynth emulation, or analog.

Lol. "It sounds like a Moog filter so it has to be a real Moog...or a digital Moog emulation VST with digital filters". ;)

I'm not laughing at you Baxter, I'm laughing at how much you know.

I'm sometimes in awe of your knowledge of sound.

Remember I asked for you advice as to what synth I should try and stick with to get the hang of about a month ago? I finally went with u-He Hive, I'm learning so much.

Every time I see you give people advice on how to make certain sounds I try and emulate it just to learn, it doesn't always work for me but I just wanna say, I think you are a genius.

Thank you very much! Yep, I remember.

I've been a sound geek since I was about 5 years old. My dad, who is a musician and brilliant electrician, has a lot to do with it. I grew up with him designing and making hi-fi speakers, guitar amps and all sorts of stuff that made or reproduced sound. There were soldering stations, big-ass oscilloscopes, componentes, tubes and cables everywhere. He worked in a video/stereo shop during the days and one day he came home with a small tape-recorder and gave it to me as a present. Maybe I turned 5 or 6, can't remember. He showed me how to play and record on a cassette. Problem was that I wanted to see the magic that went on INSIDE of it. So I stole a screwdriver from him and opened the damn thing up. Magical! When I pressed play there would be a motorized rubber wheel pressing against the tape, making the tape move over a tape-head.
He was furious when he found out what I had done.

Since then I've always been curious to figure out how stuff is made. I also like to share the stuff that I have figured out.

    Stay curious! :)

Fancy giving a 5/6 year old kid a tape recorder and expect him NOT to want to see what is going on inside lol

Hehe! Exactly! He was warning me multiple times before-hand though in an attempt to at least let the cassette player live throughout the week. I was scared to fuck it up.
    But...WTF was he thinking?! :D

In retrospect we are both glad I did what I did...or had to do.

    Sorry for thread derail.

seems like he was constantly tinkering around you anyway .. this is an almost inevitable law of nature

monkey see.. monkey do !! :bleh:

this did lead me to check out the price of the midimoog hardware with an original
moog board in it.. a cool 5 grand

sounds sweet, but I think I will explore @focusrite 's option

Sorry I should of said "Moog bass sound". It's a sound that is synonymous with Moog, but doesn't mean that it was produced by a Moog. My Prophecy has 3 variants of this sound in the factory presets. They don't sound as good as the sound does from a real Moog though, but then different architecture I guess. I suggested the tutorial or VST, to get that sound. Figured that you would post sooner or later.

I know this is going to sound like blasphemy but, whenever I see videos of people twiddling a moog filter I really don't get it. I mean I understand the power of what it can do, and how it can be used to great effect in music, BUT, that sound alone makes me feel like hurling up my last meal, and it hurts my ears in it's raw form.

I agree with you. Moog filters are Moog filters for a reason. I just found it a bit funny, as your post almost suggested one to go out and get a Moog.
    It's all good. :)
