Lurssen Mastering Console,the biggest gimmick of 2016 or....

    I installed it - Tried it on a track and had to laugh - I uninstalled it and moved on -

    Building your own mastering chain with a combination of different plugins is the way to go -​

    To be fair (and I'm not an IK 'hater') I did just that. When I heard LMC the first time I demoed it and made the few tweaks I could, I thought, "hmm that doesn't sound so bad." Then I rendered that version and a version using my own simple chain (broad eq, comp, limiter). My version had more LIFE and depth. The LMC version was noticeably flatter and "plugin-y" sounding. That initial "not bad" opinion dissipated quickly!

    For the price of my 3 "mastering chain" plugins and the price of LMC, it was a super no-brainer. I don't even believe being able to tweak it more is really an issue. It just sounds to "plain." Just an initial "better over a mix" sound that can be done with anything halfway descent and not abused.

    Possibly, it would be much better if all that stuff worked full, had all parameters to adjust and chain we could to reroute. But the best if that all fully-working stuff were as separate plugins added for T-RackS CS 5 as a brand-new upgrade. Or even version 4.50.0. Not the separate product as semi-adjustable presetable Lurssen Mastering Console.
    Do your own mixing and mastering chains by yourself. It works much better. Don't use preset while mixing and mastering. Presets are better for backups per projects if smth gets lost or so, and presets are good for creative work only like reverbs,chorus,delays, etc as starting point for further adjustments. For eqs, compressors, limiters, exciter, stereowiders it almost doesn't work. But presets for the whole chain is really strange. Not pro, it's a kind of fun or hardly semi-pro, or even quarterly-pro. Lurssen mastering console 2 should be adjustable, and with chain rerouting!

    Why do people think Mastering engineers don't mix or better yet, correct mix errors? That's literally the job of the ME. I've sat at a mastering session and watched an ME do everything from add more punch and warmth to vocals, going back and forth between different monitors and loud speakers, to tightening the low end making the bass and kick more transparent, to adding effects to vocals and removing harshness from hi hats and cymbals. And this was on a good mix. It's just that the ME felt a few things were incorrect and could sound better.

    Honestly, after listening to mastered songs processed through Manley Massive Passive hardware eqs, and SSL XRacks compared to software mastering programs. I wouldn't even recommend mastering, using strictly software.:thumbsdown:

    i know one who really hates to fix errors and declines to master a lot that have em.

    oddly enough this plug is good for singular tracks. on a whole mix it didn't do really anything excitable or musical to the mix but as a mix plug it was pretty cool. my chandler tone bender and brainworks v3 with various stages of compression and limiting yield results that are tall phat and wide and really just stellar. theres no rules as to really how its all done. I've seen various big named producers achieve similar results within a 2% margin and all have radically different approaches to getting the final mix.

    You do what you have to do,the name of the game is improvisation,like anything in life.
    The biggest mistake in mixing is obviously over use of plugins,people tend to really over complicate,since mixing is really not that complicated,but that comes with experience,trained ears take a lot of time to develop.
    Listen to albums from 70s and early 80s,so dynamic,natural,real,present,full....you can apply past knowledge with modern tools and instantly get better at mixing.Dont use artists like pitbull for reference material and certainly dont smuggle cocaine in wooden legs,its not sanitary.

    I learned back in 2000, when I first got into recording and mixing on a computer, that there is no such thing as an "automatic mastering plug" that will actually make your mix into a finished master with no work involved on (you) the engineer's part. One of the first plugs I ever bought was Prosoniq's Dynasone, because I had no idea (and still have no idea) how to master my music. It wound up being a costly mistake, because I ran an entire album through that plug and the results were beyond terrible (particularly the first time I heard it on iTunes). Worse, trying to use a "magic plug" to make my stuff sound "finished" either accentuated or masked all of the mistakes I was making with my actual mixes. These days, I use a combination of plugs, and I try to use as little of any of those as possible. In theory, mastering should do two things: make your mixes loud enough to be commercially acceptable and create continuity between the other songs on the album on which it's featured. The more work a mastering engineer -- or a plug-in! -- has to do, the worse off the material will be for it, especially if it all could have been avoided by executing a decent mix and at least trying to figure out what the hell you're doing. It may be less of an issue now that "mastering" means your track's waveform ends up being a solid black bar in your graphic editor, but trying to fix what you didn't do during the mixing stage with radical amounts of EQ and over-compression that renders most volume changes moot kind of misses the whole point of "engineering music".

    I haven't tried out the Lurssen plug yet, but if it's anything like EZMix/EZMix 2 (which I threw off of my computer not long after I installed it) or worse, AAMS, I probably won't bother with it.

    Makes a dramatic and wonderful difference on my stuff, personally I love it for a quick ready for radio sound.

    Yeah that really does affect the source material in a good way deliberately, The only other thing I can compare it to is Pro Tools with the HEAT algo thing on (designed by Dave Hill who's responsible for great hardware and software plugins, It's a pity that they're AVID exclusive as they're really good. His Phoenix/Phoenix II would sell really well).

    Usually I don't want colouring unless I can have full control over it but in the case of AVID's/Dave Hill's HEAT and Harrison console's MixBus I'm quite a fan.
