What's "producing"? You mean playing, or recording, or composing, or stacking some loops in a pile?
And how come a "producer" asks that sort of question?

 

Well, you want a good multicore processor, fast hdd (or sdd which is even better), a reasonable amount of ram( depends on wether you're planning on using enormous sample libraries, if you're planning on using x86 daw, you'll need only 4gb), and you want a good amount of connectivity (many fast usb ports). In that order. Everything else is irrelevant. You may pay attention to the videocard only if you're planning on using multiple monitors. Cheers.

I see where you are coming from, but wouldn't totally agree. True, things like dual Xeons would abliterate it, but still more than capable.

My personal machine has:

Core i7 4960X Extreme Edition
64GB RAM
4TB total of SSDs
GTX 980 Ti
2 x UAD2 PCIe cards
Asus Sabertooth Motherboard

You do get more bang for your buck by building your own though, and a high end consumer machine will be plenty good enough for most, unless you want to pre-load tons of Kontakt samples or run tens and tens of soft synths like Serum and Diva!

right, making music on a pc requires you to be part of the world elite and have the very best gear

for prosumer needs you will never need anything else then an i7 with 16gb ram, ssd and some data backup, something to hear from and you are set

 

If you are using a firewire audio interface, Just make sure to get the texas instruments firewire thingy and you'll be set, That's the most important part as I recall when I have built my own. The IEEE 1394 one I believe it is (without opening up the case). Texas Instrument's components are dependable and non of that one-hung-low crap that can cause nightmares. I use some of their stuff when building guitar pedals amongst other bits, They've acquired nearly all of the names that audio head's know and love such as Burr-Brown. They've got Maxim if/when they want them and then they've only got Analog Devices left to be honest, If they merge then it'll be a monopoly

If you are using a USB interface and haven't any need/want for firewire then just ignore the above

 

It's the problem with this medium of text on a screen, It is really hard to read anything into the person posting (unless they are being obviously rude and throwing petty insults like a silverback throwing it's shit at a wall inside a zoo enclosure), So yeah it is something I really struggle with, I always assume best intentions from anyone unless as said it's glaringly obvious. I'm sure you know what I mean along with fellow member's here and on any forum really. YouTube comments are the best place to go to blow off some steam and start hurling shit around like the aforementioned silverback in a really bad mood, For some reason it is just normal for most people in the YouTube comments section to be trying to decimate one another, I sometimes think why not just get a heavy bag and lay into it if you're that angry about some random person commenting with the intention of setting of a flame fest haha, Get in some exercise that way too :D

highly suggest if you have $500-$1000 check out the hp z-series workstations. right now i have a hp z800 (2xeon cpus=12 core/24 logical core, 192GB ram,8 terabytes in RAID) and i have YET to anything to throw at it that makes the fans spin up. you wont even know the fans are on. the inside has engineered air chambers so you hear pretty much 0db of noise. a fly is louder. I also just ordered a base model 820. any of the daws ive used dont even hiccup. and thats with other high thread programs running (virtual pc, after effects, blender, smoke, photoshop, etc.). its overkill for audio production but i use it for a multitude of other things also. it still smokes a majority of desktops/workstations on the market these days also.

also my audio interface is Mbox Pro 3.

that's around 280EUR, powerful enough to make a decent hit (it could run up to 10 nebula instances)

 

holy fuck thats a nice rig man 64gb ram is beast and 4TB ssd damn thats too much overkill

 

Any smartphone would be powerful enough for a "decent hit", but if you have a weak "operator", money I suppose could make up to some extent.

 

even a pc running windows xp with a pci fw ti card and 4gb of ram and an ssd crammed in can be an excellent audio workstation for personal use, smack some fw audiocard in there and you are good to go if the drivers exist, macky midi, what else do you want ?

nowadays we have amazing samplers with a huge selection of sounds, they take very very little cpu, its a playback device like an mp3 player.. with polyphony and modulations

vocals can be recorded pretty well with 200e of equipment, one or two channels only

transforming vocals is also pretty efficient nowadays


what else do you need? A effects sampler, analog sound? Yeah, for that you need better gear, hardware beats software but its way more expensive, you cannot have access to everything as there is way too much stuff out there

Humans are emotional beings and easily manipulated by an industry which profits from putting logs in their fire, and rightly so, but if you are being ridden to spend a big % of your income into gear then maybe, just maybe, could you let yourself feel if you really need it? Just for a 5 minutes?

if material things are what you want to enjoy in life then thats fine, but it seems a bit crazy to some other people .. which is not a problem either ..

the reality is it was never cheaper to produce music, or access a big jimmy of other information


whatever you use and have fun with, does not take your time and nerves from the important things of life, enjoy it
