They want absolute control over your data and whereabouts. They could say certain minerals and compounds for manufacturing chips are gone or destroy a few hdd factories.
Prices go way up,people migrate to clouds, slowly all HDDs for storing data disappears and you are stuck with what you can get from the left overs.
    This can happen.
That is why we are now living in the golden age for the underground music production where you can test before buying.
Music production will become a domain for the rich,at least if youll want to produce on a high level.

Any source where they mention that Windows gets a Cloud OS ?

What is new about continuous updates?... , we get them regularly at Games , Apps , VSTs etc...
The Version number will continue to increment anyways under the hood.

The only new thing which I see is that the don't change the Name Windows 10

    [EDIT]

But that's also why we're now submerged by an overflow of craps, spewed out by wannabee "DJ/producers" who relies on cracked software to commit their shits.

I sincerely hope to see that happening because then we'll go back to the heydays, when it was absolutely necessary to be very talented in order to find someone (producer, label, etc.) who accept to invest a lot of money on you. Then perhaps we'll be again witness of the birth of great artists, great bands... great music (you know, the kind of music we can enjoy for more than one week...). To be exact, music production (in the sense of making music) will not become a domain for the rich, but for the talented.

@Talmi "And if I could own my freaking OS I would own it, if M$ would only still sell it and take care of it."

I was with you until you said that. *Nobody* should own the OS everybody uses. Nobody. That's like saying I would only buy air from Microsoft. Essential things like air, food, education and medical services, and computer OS should be nobody's property. It's just too dangerous that someone can monopolise these things.

You have an example in front of you - Windows 8 and 10. Massive amounts of people are forced to use Windows [with whatever unwanted features they think are best to make more money for them] that some devious conglomerate of businessmen decided to push upon them. With a free OS like Linux you can choose what features you need and want to use, and then you choose the way you want to work with it, and even the looks of it.

Windows is like that old Ford quote "Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black" :winker:

Agreed. Sometimes the 'thought' processes of some of these giant companies are mind-boggling! It's obvious that no serious logic was within miles of these guys when these honchos gather around and derive at their decisions. (Think ME, Vista, 8, 10). Yet, once again, another asinine pronouncement from the 'sage' folks at Redmond.

If that will be the case, musicians and software programmers who have the same interest can build their own operating system and DAW and say goodbye to Microsoft and Apple! At the end of the day, you will see who be will the loser !

AVLinux and Ubuntu Studio. :headbang: But remember that you can do it with any Linux distribution if you know how, of course. You can build your own distro from scratch. You can even choose which file system you want to use. You can't do that with any other OS.

  12. While reading these incisive words we all are responding to in this thread, it came to me that the film Terminator is not actually about man vs machine, but is an allegory in the vein of Matrix where it more about individuals to maintain the universal right of sovereignty when corporate ideology, greed/need, want of control will use every tool and technology at their disposal to do a prison rape on our minds, bodies and souls.

Personally I think this whole bullshit started with the rise and success of the smartphone zombies.

Everything's designed for kids, grannies and people who don't know better and/or just don't care.

"Just touch your screen where we tell you and let the magic happen. Don't do anything on your own, just use our services and enjoy. We care for you and protect you. Don't use your brain, we think for you, because we know what's best for you (since google analytics told us). All you have to do is to agree to our terms (whatever they are) and of course to pay (whenever we think you have to), then you'll have the time of your life!"

The tremendous success of the mobile devices almost forces the companies (especially M$) to bring all that crap to the desktop world. "Programs" are not longer "programs", they are "apps". You're forced to go online to use certain apps and so on. Windows will become an "OS" where everything is controlled and dictated by Microsoft, just like everything on an Android phone is controlled by Google, or on an iPhone by Apple.
The mobile world is taking over the desktop. Your "personal" computer will become a desktop smartphone:

    My conclusion:

    KILL THE FUCKIN' ZOMBIES !!!

Nice summary, but you failed to mention the new role that M$ is taking as a senior snooping partner, where they will monitor everything that people say and do online in the great fight against terrible things. This task will require a plentiful supply of money, and as you rightly stated M$ is a for-profit organization, so where will all this money be coming from?

Yes, You know why Sony discontinued its notebooks' production in 2014, just because of this. He did it smartly.

I am talking specifically about their recent deal with the UN to control and monitor what people post and do online, and what kind of monitization is involved? Is it related to the desperate push to get everybody onto Win 10 or merely a coincidence?

I agree with everything you say on principle. Nobody should own anything, car, OS, air, or food (why not house ? and clothes ?, isn't it essential), as long as there isn't giant corporations owning everything. And if we were having a talk about our general principles on things and on life, I probably would have said what you said. My remark regarding owning an OS come from the sentence "Nobody buys OSes these days" from Qrchack. That''s what OS dev are pushing for, our idealism and utopia asside, they certainly don't want us to own our OSes or us to have a right to say what kind of inofrmation they take from it, how they control it from distance, if they can disable it, well because it's not yours anymore, it a service you're using. That's what you loose without ownership.
Ford sold the working forces black cars they were making where other car manufacters made them walk and starve . Which one do you choose ?
I want to own my OS not rent a service, I should have said. I hope it clears things up.
