I don't know if there is such a thing. So basicly what i need is a plugin (or a max4live device) that adjusts the incoming level of audio to an adjustable level of percieved volume. Thanks in advance.

Thanks. But not what i'm looking for. I realized that an absolute level won't work. And i realized that what i want cannot be done in real time, and it will need a big lookahead window. So i need something that matches the signal to a preassigned percieved volume. Like a level matching feature in saturation plugins.

Yeah, that is what i was doing. I don't wanna use the compressor cause i'm dealing with transients, and the level difference maybe more than 6-8db and compressing or limithing that much would sound like shit.

Actually you need a plugin chain. Not only one thing.3 Years ago it was part of my job to do this kind of stuff. My chain used to be:
    1. Fast compressor (cuts down all the peaks)
    2. Slow compressor (kinda "rounds" the overall RMS)
    3. Leveler (detects the actual value of your signal and acts like a fader. It "turns up the volume" on lower dbs and "turns down the volume" on higher dbs.
Those 3 are the basics.I was also using EQs,saturators, transient shapers,de-noising,de-essing and another compressor in the end and maybe a limiter(not too much) if i had a specific headroom preference.

Yep, that's it. Parallel compression ftw!

Proper gain staging will help mixing tremendously...

He is actually not looking for a normalising plugin, but a levelling plugin. Normalising is much simpler as it just levels the audio according to peaks to 0dBFS. A levelling plugin analyses the RMS volume of audio and levels it to a chosen value like -20dB RMS, or -18dB RMS. After levelling, peaks can usually easily reach about -6dBFS or even more, depending on the audio material and the chosen RMS level, of course.
