Five years ago musician and composer Ed Rex sneaked into an "Introduction to computer science" lecture at Harvard University. The lecture amazed Rex, who had just graduated from a music degree at Cambridge University and didn’t know anything about coding.
"I decided then and there to try to teach a computer to write music," said Rex.
Five years later, Rex is the chief executive and cofounder of Jukedeck, an artificially intelligent composer that can write custom-designed, original tracks in mere seconds.

The program created by Rex and his team of 17 musicians and software engineers in London is called Jukedeck Make. Its compositions have been used by the likes of Google and the Natural History Museum for advertising and promotional jingles.

The technology that underpins Jukedeck has been around for half a century or so, but Jukedeck is one of the first companies to make it easily accessible to non-technical creators.
"We want anyone who's not a musician to be able to converse with this and say 'this is how I want my music to be,'" said Rex.
Jukedeck's AI composer writes its music note by note rather than using loops. Users can choose from seven genres - including pop, ambient and rock - two moods, two instruments, and three tempos. For ultimate control over how the song sounds, they can also choose exact beats per minute and the duration of the song.
"We can write an endless number of unique and original pieces of music," said Rex. "We can give any video on the web pretty much its own unique soundtrack."
Jukedeck has raised a total of £2.5 million in funding across three rounds, the most recent of which was led by Cambridge Innovation Capital. Other investors include Backed VC, a €30 million (£23m) European fund that launched last month, and Playfair Capital, which has also invested in Appear Here and Dojo.
According to Rex, the product's "core user base" is online video makers. "Our market is YouTube creators and people making videos. We've built up a core of these people who are coming back to us every month," he said.
Individual users can create music on Jukedeck Make for free, so long as they credit Jukedeck somewhere on the video. "Our plan is to continue to offer people who need music for online video for free," said Rex.
Instead of monetising its basic service, Jukedeck plans to generate revenue from video agencies and advert makers.
Jukedeck's compositions offer more flexibility than regular stock music, according to Rex. For one, makers don't have to worry about copyright or paying royalties. But, more importantly, Jukedeck Make gives creators control over exactly how the music sounds.
"Because our music is written by an AI, you can choose exactly how it should go," said Rex.

In the next few weeks Jukedeck will release a new feature that lets users choose the exact millisecond when they want the song to climax or drop, for even more control over their tracks.
The AI is still learning: as it develops it will be able to produce a greater variety of sounds and genres. "We're trying to teach the system bit by bit how to make music," said Rex. "It's probably a late teenager at the moment, but it's getting better."
Long term, Rex hopes that Jukedeck's artificial intelligence will be available in a phone app and on platforms other than YouTube, such as Instagram and Snapchat. "Our aim for this is so much more than video creators on YouTube," he said. "This could be a way for anyone to create music for any situation they need."

    Interesting. Next step, RoboFoster911.
I have a spare RaspberryPi and I'm not afraid to use it.

I am more interested in having a program that makes .FLP files out of .WAV files so that i can get complete access to other peoples songs.

Everyone on this planet should have a computer software that can be learned to create other types of computer software without using human programmers.

The computer will be the slave in the future.
And the user will be the leader without using advanced computer knowledge at all.

The computer will do the time consuming task in the future.
The computer will do the job for you without needing money.
Electricity is the only energy it uses to power it's neural network.

Robot lawn-mowers and robot vacuum-cleaners is just the beginning of the high technologically journey.

The computer will feel more like watching a movie when using it.
Because you don't have to get too involved with it.
Things will be done in an instant and so on.

Prob a great tool to spark ideas for the dying breed of humans that can actually come up with something interesting, original and non-repetitive. Other than an idea-sparker, it sounds as good or better than some stuff I've heard from an actual living being. Pretty scary when a piece of software can "compete"--though not with the dying breed. Wonder which will come first: the death of folk who can really write songs or the machine takeover.

I would just like to say that humans are ridiculous. Most people in the world are already struggling, yet we are still looking for new ways how to make everybody else destitute :dunno:

BTW if you want to take exactly the same course that Ed Rex took, you can do it here online for free!

    https://www.edx.org/course/introduction-computer-science-harvardx-cs50x

Having taken similar classes at a top university, I can only say those Harvard guys are are on a completely different level. That David Malan dude is a very impressive lecturer. I highly recommend this course to anybody who is interested in coding. It is without a doubt one of the best Computer Science foundation courses on the planet, and it's totally gratis.

It honestly reads as a failed musician's/evil genius masterplan to take revenge on his more talented colleagues

i mean, i just made a few songs on there and they are terrible. they all use the same four chord pattern at some point, and even though we can mix on computers, they sure can't mix themselves...

@MrMister yes they can. I don't want to get started, but I'll sum it up by quoting a Chinese CEO having dinner with Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, "We don't need ppl anymore for anything." "We still use ppl in my resorts because I can teach even the simple to smile and serve a drink."

But responding to @DarthFader's RaspberryPi because believe it or not, pls everyone come to NYC and piss in the streets. It is now legal to piss in the streets AND drink alcohol from a paperbag as well...and then throwing the bottle anywhere you want cause littering is legal too. Throwing up is already legal. Yo, no bars necessary anymore: buy a 40, walk around, piss, throw up take a selfie, throw the bottle against the wall, go home. What could be more fun.
The honorable Mayor, William Wilhelm I mean, de Blassio, (Wilhelm is his real name), see the jails being filled by the 3rd world citizens that make use of my "sanctuary" city (laws? we don't need no stinking federal laws!) don't know how to even use a toilet, so he had to make it legal to piss in the street to save money and manpower.

OMFG. But I'm serious, pls, come to NYC take a piss in the street, and put it on Instagram. You're not gonna make my city any more disgusting.

    http://www.thepoliticalinsider.com/40005-2/
(before they actually changed the law...see it was racist to arrest ppl that piss in the street because of the ppl who were doing it...I'm not joking)

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...ng-street-drinking-alcohol-bag-littering.html

So I need the whole world to come to my city and piss in the street so we all won't be considered racist. I'll hold your phone for an action pic if necessary...idk if you can dance or run and pee, but I'll find out.

    Coming soon: The machete riots.
