superbowl and judgement day are to short, you need something which is longer than the normal bid times.

Just picked up also quite a deal on eBay (but like 9000x your price). Vintage item in new condition, never used, for even lower price than used. :disco:

Now, I'm not saying you can never get a worthwhile deal on such things, however:

There's a reason other people pass this stuff up. That's because even at a low price, all the elbow grease, parts, time, expertise, etc. to get something working perfectly usually offsets any perceived financial savings. If you get something free and have to spend two/three weeks and $80-$100 to get it working then you'd probably be better off just dropping $300 on something brand new with a warranty.

Most people would be better off valuing their time more. Better to learn a softsynth inside and out than buying some Yamaha DX7, repairing it, finding storage space, troubleshooting how to load patches, etc. unless you actually care about gear more than music/audio.

Nothing wrong in enjoying gear, but can you really see Deadmau5 (or whoever your idol is) tinkering with op-amps when everyone is waiting for the next song to come out on Beatport?

I'd dare say that cheap eBay bids are a dangerous distraction for the majority of people on here.

I once found a cheap rusted laundry dryer stand, costs 5$ in the store.Had to sand it down and repaint, cost me more than if id buy new.
Its not about time and money,it just feels good bringing something to life weather its a mixer or some cheap shitty thing you`ve found in some back alley.
Also, why buy when you can recycle?
Besides, just the parts alone are worth money,or he could use the parts for his own equipment.

    Those are all legit reasons.

Just keep in mind that they aren't necessarily musical reasons. It depends if your priority is feeling good or accomplishing something musically.

I mean, yeah, you might be able to part it out for money if that's your goal, but it also costs time to break it apart, find multiple buyers, package it up, post it, etc.

My point is that anyone serious about music should always keep in mind whether something is really going to add to the music or if it's just a fun diversion or a shortcut that's not really shorter. The same problems arise with compulsive downloading / audioz collecting.

For the record, I love scoring "deals" and fixing such things. But I'm also painfully aware that it's not truly adding to my productivity in an audio sense. It's just a fun diversion that loosely ties in with making music. That's the insidious thing, because it seems like you're doing something to further your audio goals, but 90% of the time you're acting against them.

I've got to stop preaching now though, my soldering iron is fuming :)

I guess im "visibly muslim", but actually an atheist. And you missed the punch line, it wasnt that muslims are generous, it was a muslim going to a church and financially taking advantage and facing jesus's wrath.

But of course even if it wasn't a church and just some guys basement I would have offered him more than a cent.

I agree one mans junk can be everyone elses junk.

Theres many reasons I went ahead with this, first this may seem stupid but I think its a solid reason, whats the first part that fails on old gear? The VU light! all are functioning (and I know they havent been replaced in atleast 15 years), that told me that everything else is in fairly reasonable condition and based on my testing it has been, just some scratchy pots/knobs nothing that some compressed air and contact cleaner wont fix.

I also picked this up because I'm a professional engineer so I like to tinker with things especially audio gear, my life motto is constant improvement.

Worst comes to worst, I bought 30 kilos of material, something has to be worth enough to cover its cost. I count around 200 fader/pot caps.

Parts are funny like that. When you really need some OEM part or something they just don't make anymore (matching set of knobs) then it seems worthwhile to drop a fair amount of money on it. I can't stand to have equipment that's functional but kludged. It's just not feng shui.

Paying someone to find, purchase, and refurb synths and set them up for you is a little different than yanking them apart yourself to rebuild their PSUs or finding that one bad transistor that's preventing the backlight from coming on. Or finding/setting up some old Atari ST just to run some sysex patch editing software for some obsolete thing from '87 when a new Access Virus (which is "infinitely" more powerful) can be connected through USB and tweaked/recalled just like a VST.

I don't follow Mr. Mouse enough to truly know, but I'd be willing to bet he pays people to maintain his lab.

Also, anyone notice mau5 said the Arp 2500 was R2-D2? It's not, of course. The 2600 was. Not that it matters in the slightest.

You're just like me :D i wrote my first comment because i happen to live in an arab country and not because i'm muslim. And i know for a fact that muslim people are good people by nature and wouldn't necessarly kill just because their religion tells them so.

This year we'll have the UEFA EURO 2016 .. and I guess this also will work perfectly for items that wont be shipped internationally.
