Because HIP Hop not been around long enough.

Rules for rock n roll 25 years in the business i think.

Duskwings hit the nail on the head.

It's not decided by the people but the owners/sindicate etc.

Is nowadays simply a money making racket and who's in it is decided upon simply in terms of maximizing revenue. JMO

The whole concept of the Rock n roll hall of fame is flawed, its ridiculous that legends like Deep Purple were introduced so late, this year i think?
People like us who come from the underground shouldnt care about it,rock, metal, scoring, rap whatever, who gives a fuck, they can have Britney Spears introduced if they want, the world has so much more serious problems than this unimportant organization.

Come on, it's a crock of shit. The very notion that some people can decide 'the great and good' of 'rock and roll' is a joke, and anyone buying into it is buying into all the crap. It's a crummy american effort at reproducing The Greek Academy, only for rock and roll, rather than metaphysics, or whatever. It's a way to attain hierarchy, patronage, respectability and affirm its members' **status** - it's an attempt to recreate all the things that (for me) rock and roll intrinsically opposes. They want an inside and an outside.

The whole thing is embarrassing. More interesting is why people care about what other people like? Has anyone ever known someone to say "Other people like *better* music than I do......." No, other people always like crap I don't. Seems a universal truth. Humans in self-serving belief, shock!

this Hall thing is a big joke anyway. nevermind the rappers, they put ABBA and fucking Beegees into Rock n Roll Hall of Fame before Deep Purple FFS!!! you just, you could stop right there. but wait a minute! they've even put fucking Madonna and Donna Summers and who else not before Deep Purple. into Rock and Roll hall of fame. I just scratch my head and think just WTF is this list? it's so fucking random. now how on earth does this organization get any credibility and respect? it's a joke, plain and simple. I don't know why there's so much of this buzz. I liked how Purple said fuck you to them previously. because Deep Purple don't need this piece of joke award and they know it. it's such a formality, really. the Hall established in 1986, by that time, Deep Purple was already in the world history's Rock n Roll Hall of Fame big time and a shitty opinion of a few critics changes nothing.

As has been noted above, the term Rock 'n' Roll can be interpreted very widely when people want. Is Bowie rock n roll? Perhaps, some of his moments, are The Beatles, Bob Marley, Madonna, ABBA even? Perhaps, in the widest sense, the singing styles of Marley and The Beatles defintely are even if their music is not categorically Rock. These are included and more. To me, 'trendy' always referred to new fashion styles, now today the 'trendy' haircuts are copied from the World War 1 era and make me sick. Read this to cure any accidental ignorance about what they include in the rock n roll hall of fame.

HipHop is not even music at all. Rock´n Roll is handmade music. Musicians play real instruments like guitars, drums, bass aso.
All You HipHop -"Artists" (hmmmpfff!) have never even held a real guitar in your hands, nor are you able to play or sing a single tone.
All You can is click your mouse button and talk shit into your mic. That´s it. So mentioning HipHop and Rock´nRoll in one context is pure blasphemy.

Hmm. Sounds like music to me.
Your definition. I imagine it isn't one that can withstand serious scrutiny. Not that it matters I suppose, it's just your own definition, not a universal one. What is rock n roll? To you it doesn't include hip hop? That seems odd to me (not that I like hip hop).

Some hip Hop does rock and for a while in the 90's there was a a lot of hip hop influence in rock, where to draw the line? beastie boys rock.... NWA rock... bands like that i can see... P Shitty, Kenye etc no way.

Gene Simmons is a delusional clown & Kiss is was and always will be an average rock band with a gigantic show before anyone else was doing it aside from Alice Cooper & Pink Floyd. That being said The rock n roll Hall of fame is a Hard Rock cafe without food. rock n roll is counter culture anti establishment. I think the only way you should be able to get in to any hall of fame is after 5 years of not doing it anymore and then judged on your body of work. it would have kept bands like metallica out given the fact they have released more indigent crap the quality music same for Kiss for that matter!!!

It's not rock it's roll. From a technical point of view. Anyway since when did Gene Simmonds become an authority on anything?

EDIT!: Well I think it's debatable because actually it does have both Rock and Roll in terms of on-beat and off beats! (but I'm still correct about Geney!)

He should just go open a KISS Hall of Fame if he doesn't want to share the spotlight with artists he doesn't like.

I also agree with Steve Miller's recent comments.

Isn't there a Hip-Hop Hall of Fame? The genre has enough of a legacy and a canon, by now, to warrant its own.

I don't see why people here are contenting with Simmons' opinion – it's pretty obvious. I can understand inducting "roots" musicians, whose styles inseminated rock-n-roll, but hip-hop isn't even in the rock-n-roll family tree. Hip-hop's replacing rock as affluent white kids' soundtrack to their own dumbed-down misbehavior doesn't justify inducting hip-hop artists into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame.

Rock and Roll doesn't exist and never did...

  19. I don't understand why, at least pointing to the very few that I have heard speaking out about the subject, why they want to be associated with an elitist white boy and sometimes girl clique that is totally self serving. Mike Nesmith of the Monkeys (I still love the Monkees to this day by the way) pinned it as a branding of the company issue and any decisions made concerning induction process is first and foremost a dollar and cents one, sooooo...

In a Facebook post, Monkee Michael Nesmith stated that, "I can see the HOF (Hall of Fame) is a private enterprise. It seems to operate as a business, and the inductees are there by some action of the owners of the Enterprise. The inductees appear to be chosen at the owner's pleasure. This seems proper to me. It is their business in any case. It does not seem to me that the HOF carries a public mandate, nor should it be compelled to conform to one".
