The other day, Gene Simmons said: Hip Hop music DOESN'T Belong in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. What is your take?

Well...one wouldn't put baseball players in the basketball hall of fame. And since it's not called, generally, the "Music" hall of fame just like there's no "Sports" hall fame. There's is logic in his statement.

He's actually been saying this for years. He has the right to his opinion but I totally disagree with him.

Totally disagree but think the dude's a bit unstable like.

He went through a lot growing up and isn't rare for him to make a few obscure statements however he's entitled to his opinion as said above by Spaceley

His stuff of course is much more meaningful, Crazy Nights & Lick it up!

Similar to what most "Rappers" talk about really

It doesn't.... because if it did... then it would be the hip hop hall of fame....
I don't see Jay-Z, Janet Jackson or Eminem being inducted in to the County Music hall of fame...

    Completely different genres....

    Hip Hop isn't just music,it's a culture.
And it's influenced more genres and more people than ANY OTHER genre on the planet.
To try to downplay it's importance is ignorant at best.

Rock N' Roll didn't start (or end)with KISS.

Setting aside the fact that a hip-hop hall of fame doesn't exist, the assertion itself is actually baseless. Take a look at the names included in the Rock Hall's very first induction class and you'll find blues masterRobert Johnson, country innovator Jimmie Rodgers, and the "Hardest Working Man in Show Business" the "King of Soul" Mr. James Brown. Oh, and the year after that they inducted Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, and Marvin Gaye. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has never, in its entire history, limited itself to purely "rock" acts.

I think the main point is that it is primarily a museum (Hall!) and privately owned business.

It may not have been like that when it was it was established but nowadays it's more of a tourist attraction than anything else.

It's there nowadays to make money, well at least the museum.

Michael Jackson ain't exactly Rock N Roll imo.

It's not just for rock n roll icons but also outstanding musicians. producers & songwriters.

I agree with OLDSKOOL that is rock n roll ended with Gun's N Roses in a way with of course AXL not to happy about it!

As it's owned privately they can choose to include whatever figures they see fit.

Possibly they should change the name but that wouldn't be good for business I guess

Steve Miller summed it up well

"You tell me what the hell is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and what does it do besides talk about itself and sell postcards?"

    Always liked NWA

Rock and Roll doesn't care about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

It reminds me of the time Brian May played guitar on top of Buckingham Palace (!) as the British rock and pop establishment schmoozed the Queen on some birthday, or whatever. How embarrassing! Fiddling for a monarch.

Anyway, it's like the flat-earth society or something.

    Just another stupid, yankee idea.

It's not all about "Rock Acts"! It is not called The Rock N' Roll Act Hall of Fame. The names you mentioned along with countless others from diverse genres such as early blues, gospel, soul, motown, and country were important foundational influences in the evolution of rock n' roll. These folks are honored (and rightly so) for their historical contributions to what became rock n' roll. Hip-hop's influence on or likeness to the rock genre is a big fat zero, and IMO hip-hop has little roots relationship with rock n' roll either! Therefore, it has no business being in the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, just my opinion mind you!
