The way to check vocal level is to turn your monitors right down. Doing this the kick needs 2db of 60hz and the vocal needs to come back. So Pull the thwack frequency 2db out of the kick. Try pushing the distortion on the lead vocal not the double.

 

Its getting very close..

 

on a stereo mix for vocal check i always turn down my monitors till almost silence >>>if the music drops out befor the vocal the vocal is to loud an vice versa ... Sounds good guys \m/

Ok, opening a cold one and going back into the mix...

 

Cold one I am going to the shop.

 

I had both the lead vox bussed to one aux and all 3 of the BG vox to another. I originally had decapitator on the lead vox aux. So I took it off and put it directly on the lead vox chain so the double wasnt saturated with it. Then I readjusted all my vox levels to get it to sound right again.
Next I tweaked the kik buss eq and took out some thwack at 2678khz and boosted it a couple db at 50hz.
After adjusting my lead vox I had to go and adjust the level and threshold on the sidechain ducking of my lead gtr.
Last I turned my monitors way down and listed for anything that sounded too loud at low volumes.

HELL YEAH! This is sounding GREAT now!

 

No the vocal chain was better before. Go backwards. Then add another distortion to the lead only. Kick is good. Also now vocal is about 1db too low.

 

Sounds great but you are beating the Ab/f/gb progression to death. Try f/gb, f/gb to break up the monotony. or even b/db.

 

To my ears too. NICE. The band is gonna be stoked.

 

I am hearing reverb on the HiHat is there a purpose to this. "Dry is the word"

I mean we are really just making very small adjustments now.

I am fucking impressed. Shit your good. It has a Vibe now. The only thing left to try is put an M/S eq on your master bus. HiPass Mid at 40hz HiPass sides at 150hz. Your done.
Leave at least 2 days without listening to it before you master it. I have really enjoyed this watching it come together. I hope all the lurkers have got something out of this. I am up for any questions and I hope everybody likes the result.

Now when you mix the other tracks use this as a reference.
And if it track is not working look for how we got here.
As an engineer you can only get better from here. Now you know what to look for its all up.
You have to be able to mix any style of music but you look for the same things and fix them.
Mastering will even the track out and you can overall eq a bit of mids a bit of 12 khz a bit of saturation a bit of clipping etc and end up with a great track. -7.4 LUFS
