I have a "room" on the rhythm gtrs from the amp sim. Common sense tells me I need to re-render them dry and remove the room? Like we did with the drums.

Yes try that with the guitars. With the rverb you can change the decorrelation to 7 different settings. See which one fits your tempo best.
The kick is a bit loud. Maybe put a bit more pre delay on the drum reverb. I am just not hearing that big sound.
It just keeps getting better. I know its a slow process but I am hoping after this you will use these techniques across all your mixing. Of course hip-hop drums are best dry. But....

Thank you a million times for this.
Reading this thread makes me feel like an intern at a pro studio getting yelled at for not getting the damn coffee fast enough. Your "rough" language (it's not that rough, just humoring the PC police in this thread) is more than worth it for this priceless education we're all getting.

It is magical sitting here and listening to this mix get better and better. And I can tell how average my mixes are now, because I would have called this mix "done" a long time ago. And we're not even finished yet.

Bravo sir. I will keep this thread bookmarked.

I am using the relab 480l and have noticed that I have to hit it hard on the inputs. I'll try switching it out with the lexicon one and see if its better/roomier.

Try this reverb. I only spent a few minutes on it.
This is a chain .. Send enough to the chain so you are getting between -5 and -8 on the 1176.
This may not work but give it a go.

Only send a little kick to it but lots of snare. A bit of hihat would be good. You just have to put the drums in their own space. Visualize the room they are in.
Here is a Kontakt preset I made. http://www.melangedigital.com/Sounds-Like-Led-Zep-V2.zip Might give you some idea.

The lesson on the drum reverb is obvious. On the chain I setup I hi passed the send so the reverb is only activating on sound above 200hz.
This makes it more powerful. This chain is very subtle you need to tune it to the drums. The pre delay, the hi end eq compression you are trying to create a space for the drums. You have to visualize them in a very big room and they sound just amazing. Doesn't matter how good the drummer is every time he hits a drum you have to think thats incredible.
Currently the snare does not sound like its in a space. This is not easy to achieve. You also don't want it to sound progammed you want to retain the live feel. To me currently the snare has an ugly note about it. Its a bit wooden. There is no actual rattle of the snare. That is not a problem.

    The "old white noise trick".
Get a white noise generator and send it to a gate. Send the snare to the side chain of the gate and adjust the hold and decay till you can hear the snare sizzle. If you hear it as white noise it is not working. Nobody should know what you are doing. But the snare should come alive. Then if there is to much wood in the snare eq it out against the white noise.
Waiting on the mix to see if I got the drum reverb close.

I must say these are techniques that have worked for me for decades..
There are a heap of videos by Dave Pensado and Warren Huart that are invaluable. I have lots of them on my website and am trying to add more all the time. http://spencerlee.audio
I have put up videos by lots of different people (all from youtube) some of them are an hour long but the secret is to watch the whole video and you may only get one trick from it but that is invaluable. Many many hours of viewing and learning.
Everything you want to know about mixing is on youtube but I am trying to sort out the bad information and only list the good.
    Happy viewing, Happy mixing.

The lesson and chain is very obvious to me. I have been producing with computers for 10 years. Started with EDM, then a lot of hip-hop, never recorded a rock band, though. Just a bunch of rappers and a few singers.

I got a lot more room/verb to it now. I cranked up the snare bottom mic before, I think that's where the woody sound is coming from.
I will try the white noise trick.
I just re-rendered the rhythm gtrs without the amp room and saturated them with decapitator and compressed the hell out of them with the 76.
Went to put some reverb on them and realized that the renaissance reverb wasn't in the mercury bundle. I'm installing it now. I should have something up for you to listen to in a while.
But that could mean hours to us.
I am my own worst critic.

I am sitting in front of my computer having a few guinesses and looking out at the ocean. It could not get any better. So what I am saying I might fallover in the next hour or so.
But looking forward to where we are going. This is a lot of fun for me and I hope we are educating a stack of people.

You are not using the reverb side of Rverb you are just using the early reflections. I think I got this from a Dave Pensado video.

I'm a fan of the Belgian white weizens. About 2 in myself. Cheers from sunny Florida at 2:23 am. The more I mix, the better I drink!
    Here's another pass master sensei....

Again, I can't thank you enough.

That snare is kicking you in the teeth now. I watch a dave pensado vid on the 80's noise gate technique.

I love it its really good. Now the drums are working but I am really surprised how good the guitars sound.

Ok On the drum bus try 5db of 6-7khz.
    Just needs the spike there.
Its now coming together. What do other people think. Is that the reverb I setup.
Chuck the vocals in and put the 1/8 th delay on them dont change anything else about the vocals.
I am so impressed with what you did with the guitars.
