Nice resources. Is quite interesting the 5th video. He use bx_digital V2 in m/s mode and does not cuts frequencies below 200 Hz (side)...weird thing... because below 200 Hz (side) there are not relevant musical info. Is there something I should know? :dunno:

Might be misunderstanding what you're asking, so apologies if I am! There can certainly be plenty of relevant musical info below 200Hz coming from sides, not just mid. It's the human ear that can't discern where in the stereo field a low frequency sound comes from. The sound can still physically come from the sides only, we just can't perceive it. It's a good idea to condense low freqs to mono to guard against phase issues since we "hear" them in mono anyway, but you can't just chop the sides' low freqs off entirely if they're stereo. If you do, you can (and will) lose a bunch of information that way.

If you do it properly instead, by condensing low freqs to mono rather than just lopping off the sides, you end up with 0 low freqs in the side channel naturally while also not losing whatever bass wasn't dead center at the beginning. There are lots of VSTs that make doing this super easy. I use Sonalksis StereoTools, which has a knob specifically for converting to mono
everything below the freq. you set.

If it doesn't need it, you don't have to do it. Same thing with rolling off the entire lows at 20-40hz.
It also depends on the genre and purpose of the master, if you're making club music you might want to sacrifice some width for louder RMS.
Also 200hz is a bit high, if you're highpassing the sides a good place is in the subwoofer crossover range which is 50-150hz.

I have always found these videos to be a great resource.
I cited them in another post about gain staging.

    About the low frequency cuts...
I recently heard an acquaintance that graduated a well known music school give someone the same advice; that he should be getting rid of low frequencies. It disturbs me a bit to know this is being taught to aspiring producers and engineers. Zentropy provided some good info. Depending on the material there could be some important stuff going on below the 200 mark. I would also add, in general I try to only suppress what is necessary to provide room for competing frequencies or remove anything harsh/undesirable. When making room, I do so according to what is more important for that specific song. I never go into a session with "always cut X frequency" in mind.

Possibly how I found them  but since the video series has relatively small viewing figures, I thought they deserved wider recognition considering the thoughtfulness of the content. It's a great place to get started on the concepts of professional audio, and should provide a good foundation to those who work their way through all of the material.

Excellent, I see the author is a professor which kind of explains the considered content. This series is definitely something I would refer back to from time time time, or share with others. Thanks for the links

I actually agree with you, i thought you are supposed to cut the sides below 200Hz because if you ever cut to vinyl it makes it easier as the needle has to move less violently when both cutting the vinyl and playing the vinyl which is better for arm/needle wear and tear.

@SyNtH. Most mastering engineers would just leave it up to whoever is pressing the vinyl.

These videos really helped me to get decent tone out of VST amp sims and other analogue modeled plugins
