    Hello buddies,

Here is a cover of "My Funny Valentine" that I made and sang.
Sam Sine - My Funny Valentine

Let me know what you think! Vocals are not perfect as I'm not a singer but a composer/music producer.

    Thanks for listening,
    Sam

I like that. Can you tell a bit about the gear and software that you used?

Really great, Sam! Wonderful phrasing, and the tempo change was really tasty.

Great cover. vocals sound real and vulnerable, what you want for this song. Nice job.

Very nice one! Really like those changes and the general sound of the production. Everything`s just very smooth and right where it should be.
Your voice is actually ok. But yeah...this one with Peter Cincotti`s, or Matthew Bellamy`s (Muse) voice would be a real treat!

    Thanks dude for your comment.
The bass is recorded through an amp with a U87 mic.
The guitar is a telecaster recorded through an orange amp.
Piano is a steinway from East West.
Vocals are going through a Waves Reverb ( Jazz club IR for the early reflections and a tad of concert hall for the tail)

With an Eddie Kramer master tape on the submix.
Plus of course, some EQing here and there...

    :)

Thank you sir! And also for the one on Youtube!
Maybe the good phrasing comes from that I'm not an English native speaker so I tend to articulate more :) Although after living for several years in LA, I'm sure I might mumble once in a while, now.. lol

Thank you so much. You are right, my vocals are very vulnerable and not very technical, but indeed, it might give more emotion to it! :)

Thank you man! I love your critics. Indeed, I would totally imagine Peter Cincotti singing this song. Not sure about Matthew Bellamy though, even though I love Muse!

    Really great production.
Nice change to the lot of electronic music here *yes*

I like your vocals too, but they lack some energy at the high notes... they need a bit more "push".

Bellamy would surely push them too much, though

Thanks Mister Gulliver! You're right I lack some energy in the high notes because they are almost too high for me. I only have a 3 octave range in my chest voice.. That's why I'm not a singer :)
Thanks for commenting and giving constructive feedback. Funny about Bellamy :)

By the way, I'm not sure something from the "Great American Songbook" is especially a "cover". We all certainly have our influences, but your version is really all yours, Sam.

Scanning Foobar, I found 68 different artists versions of "My Funny Valentine" just in my Jazz library. It's a show tune from the 1937 Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart musical "Babes in Arms" (introduced by former child star Mitzi Green). After being recorded by Chet Baker, Frank Sinatra and Miles Davis, the song became a popular jazz standard, appearing on over 1300 albums performed by over 600 artists!

Not being picky - just hate to see you sell yourself short.

    Dear Bassweasel,
I'm so humble and honored to get positive feedback from you with nice words! I went on your website and saw that you are a jazz teacher, bass player and overall have been a musician all your life. It just is very rewarding for my work to even get your attention.. I'm young and still have a lot to learn, thanks for encouraging me :) I also agree that it might not be the right way to describe my rendition as a "cover". Yet, Chet Baker was my reference :)

Are you sure you didn't make a mistake there??
3 octaves would be great. I am a singer, and I have a bit more than 2 octaves in my chest voice.

"My Funny Valentine" has a range from C to Eb (in C minor), so less than one and a half octaves. How could be that a problem with a 3 octaves range?

Yep sorry, I didn't mean chest voice, but the whole range including head voice. My chest voice is a little less than 2 octaves from E1 to D3. And already struggling around C3.
