Hi im just to about to build a Bedroom Studio..

can you suggest

1. A good Monitor Headphone
2. Monitor Speakers for beginners like me
( Currently i cant afford the High ends.. Entry Level grade would do or maybe i can buy Used Mid Grades on EBAY )

Yamaha HSM80.

They are the 8 inchers. Depending on your budget/room maybe the cheaper 5" versions can do you fine.

 

I have and use M-Audio BX5a.. quite cheap and extremely good and competitive in this price bracket (250/300€ x pair).
Headphones? I swear by my Sennheiser HD600 but they are not "cheap"...

Choice of cans will depend on what you will use them for in your studio.
If it is "just" monitoring/mixing/mastering open-back type will give you a more natural sound.
If you will use them for tracking and double-tracking you will need closed-back types to avoid spills while recording.

I would suggest you to invest all you can on a good pair of open-back cans for everything and buy a pair of cheap in-ear headphones for tracking (or use those that comes with your MP3 player, if you've got one).

When money is less tight you can then splash out on a pair of good tracking cans too (Beyer, AKG, Sennheiser, just to name a few).

I use a set of Studiophile CX8 M-Audio speakers and I`m more than happy using them. I don`t think you will go far wrong with a set of M-Audio`s
So I`m in full agreement to SAiNT`s suggestion on this.

everyone has KRK ones but the bass can be so big it kind of cancels itself out.

avoid any thing described as too 'neutral' it will have shit bass

with the headphones you wont need them for a bit

 

Maybe the Behritone C50A (fs 90Hz-17kHz) or Behritone C5A (fs 150Hz-15kHz), could be a go for the beginning? It’s surely not going to be THE fullrange monitor, but i suppose with these you could get a useful pair of „powered“ mix-monitors whilst saving the bucks for some bigger ones. The cheapest price i’ve found in the net was 89 Euros, each. The piano-ish black version (C50A) is +10 Euros/each. Schweet cubes 165 x 165 x 198 mm. I’ve been told in the musicshop that they’ll be out in mid of july.

 

Genelec is the last shit not depending on model. Sounds beautiful and useless.

M-Audio Studiophil SP5 (correct me, if it's a wrong name) is not as bad for the price. Now it's released under ESi.

If you find Yorkville YSM1 or ART SLM-1 (the same is Yorkville), you are the happiest man until the end of the World. But it is passive and you need an amp like Alesis RA-100 or something like that.

KRK Rokit Rp5 G2's......I use these and as long as they're positioned well (as with any monitors of course) they give a very true response imo. They're best on stands but are happy on the desk aswell.
Sennheiser's forcans every time, but they do cost, but defo worth every penny.......You can buy your monitors one at a time remember!!!!!

looks like Yamaha HSM50 or M audio isnt bad for a Novice like me...
As for the Headphone Sennheiser HD600/650 are nice except for the Price ..
maybe ill go what Gulliver advices for Shure SRH-440 ( what you think?? )

For 85 Euro you will have a hard time finding a better headphone.
If you have more to spend it's a different story, but in my opinion it can even compete with many more expensive models.

But if you have the chance, you should always try headphones before buying (just as monitors).
Good sound is also very subjective, and with headphones, good comfort is as critical and important than sound quality.

 

whatever you do ... try them in a shop first

2a track with crispy highs
3a track with punchy mids

4 a good over all track


play on the speakers and listen for the bass
move away a meter
wait 2 seconds
move away a meter

repeat

with headphones do similar


don't trust anyone even magazine are full of it

try in a shop FFS

don't be hasty or you'll get shit or inappropriate gear
