Hi and thanks in advance for any good input and advice based on your experiences!
I am wondering whether i should start using Windows 10 for music production. I am on 7 now.
I have read other general things here and other places but would appreciate actual experiences from people on here specifically. I am not that concerned about issues of privacy etc in Windows 10 that i have read about and things like not being able to turn off automatic updates etc. I am really just interested in how the OS works or doesn't, any issues with Music production software etc.
Input appreciated and hope everyone has a wonderful holiday :)

    hi and happy xmas !

w10 is running perfect here. in fact, it feels like some self-optimization was going on under the hood after the install. everything just works, glitch free, os feels more nature than w8.1 did, which was already better handling audio than w7. i was same like u , hesitating first but there's nothing 2 worry about. i run reaper 5.1, studio one 3.1, and pro tools 12, all error free. i recommend to run Ultimate windows tweaker 4, donotspy10, o&o shutup10 after install. i'm on sandisk ssd for system drive, everything opens 3-4 times faster than before. sample libs, daws, plugins, everythang. happy music making !

I usded to install the latest OS as soon a it was released until windows 7.After it I stopped because windows 8 was a shit, even microsoft admitted it,and now this windows, which with every beta before the official release, ended up becoming a windows 7 with an improved look of windows 10.
This said, there are a few things u have to consider in terms of compatibility, not all the hardware and the software working on windows 7 works on w10 at the moment.
    I wouldn t change anyway

As an early adopter of windows 10 I can say I have found it nothing but a positive experience. I'm running two M-Audio delta 1010's using windows 7 64 bit drivers and Cubase 8.5 Pro. Runs like a dream.

General rule of thumb for any O/S is to run the current version - 1 and wait for a year for it to become stable software developers to catch up. With this in mind I would go Windows 8.1 and get the free upgrade to 10 ready for when you want to try it. You could also go dual boot 8.1 / 10 and see how it goes.

The single biggest issue you will have with WIndows 10 is the complete lack of control over updates I cannot begin to tell you the pain I went through with new drivers being forced on my system that kept screwing it up, particularly GFX and power related ones.

I'll be sticking with WIndows 8.1 with Classic Shell for a while yet, its been rock solid with Cubase, Pro Tools and Studio One.

I would also say it depends on the DAW, Windows 10 & Cubase7 to 8.5 is the right match anything below 7 id stay on Win 7. Studio 1 stay on WIN 7. i can't speak for other DAW as i haven experience testing them . Suffice to say im very happy where im at at the MO with win 10 pro with everything turned off.. and cubase 8.5

No if you use Brainworx (bx_digital v2, bx_hybrid v2 etc) or Maag (EQ2, EQ4) stuff. Plugin Alliance had warned their customers about the "We do not currently support Windows 10" issue. Take care what you choose. Better know first what kind of issues will you expect. :)

Huh? For real? Whats the issue? Am on Win10 x64, Studio One 3, bx digital v2, Maag, bx_meter, all working fine, haven't noticed any issues.
I've switched from Win8.1 to Win10 in september, only issue i had was, some fonts were missing in Studio One, but problem has been resolved
with Win update few days later, since then, it is rock solid, smooth, kinda remainds me of my XP days workflow feel, dunno why.

No. Win10 will be trashed like for 8/8.1 just wait and see they said the exact same things about them.

If everything works fine than you should stick with your 7. As most of us here, i'm long time Windows user and only by the last 2-3 years running an hackintosh machine.
For me Windows 7 will be the latest Microsft OS, if i had to change it i'll go for OSX for sure. There are too many things that MS is doing wrong lately, i feel like they are losing the focus on the users and only taking care about the challenge vs Apple wich makes me really annoyed.
I tried all the OS from MS and even Vista felt better than what they are doing right now, that's my taste. I'll respect other users opinions wich are very happy about it. All i can say it's make sure that everything you are using now is 100% compatible with Win10, but if were I would wait PC with Win10 as OEM instead of upgrading from 8.1

The only time I update Windows 7, is when I have to. Studio One 3 required a platform update. I installed it 9/26/2015. Prior to that no updates since I first installed Windows 7 in June of 2012 on this machine. If it works, don't fix it.

If windows 10 is all they say it is, I look forward to the upgrade, but there is no way I can trust automatic updates. Frankly, it is irresponsible of Microsoft to dilly dally with proprietary PCs. The work being performed on business PCs is too important. They can take there $200 OS and shove it up their A$$E$. I've got Tens of Thousands of dollars worth of software, and Thousands of dollars worth of hardware, and Priceless amounts of work on my PC. I'm not willing to trust Microsoft, because I can't afford too.

I'm sure everybody who runs it will say it's running fine and dandy, but if you read tech forums you'll know how many problems there still is with Windows 10 and I would only recommend it to my worst enemy.

People really do this shit, you know? Even if the system sucks and gives them a headache they will not admit their own mistake for "upgrading". I encounter this quite often and not just with operating systems. Whenever people buy something new it is automatically "so much better" than something else they used because they have to justify the money and possibly some effort they invested to do it. So first thing - don't trust anybody but yourself with this decision.

What I also can't understand... what is so important in Windows 10 *for music making* that is so much better than Windows 7 , and makes you want to give up the cosy and somewhat stable [less than XP IME] working Windows 7 for a new and still in beta Windows 10? Just so you could tell your neighbour that you use Windows 10? :hahaha:

If you decide to go W10 I predict you will be one of those who say this after fiddling with it for 2 hours or less:

    1) wow, it works so smoothly! No problems at all. What is this stupid SineWave talking about. Ha ha ha .

    2) in the other thread, one day later: "Guys I can't make this ****** work with my new and shiny Windows 10. Can you help?"

Replies to this will be: "I'm using W7 and it works", "I'm using W8, no problems"... and "You can try this or this"... but it works "smooooooth" in the other thread, eh? :hahaha: For the record, generally there are more problems with W8 than W7 in my experience, too.

I've seen this behaviour multiple times on AS and elsewhere on forums, very inspiring. :hahaha: People writing in a thread about W10 that it works so smoothly and great, but in the other thread they are the only ones having problems with something. Come on, be realistic ffs! :hahaha: I don't need anyone to tell me how it works. All I need to know is: 1) it's a new OS from Microsoft. That's enough to know there will be many problems with it for at least 1-2 years, and even then you have to ask yourself what is the point of having a newer OS? Do you really need it? Why?

    Cheers! :mates:

Well as many above already stated, if your system is running smooth now i would not change. Ive did and had to change back just a few weeks back. It was a stupid misstake to even try. I did it mostly since some of my friends that i wrtie with did. But we all have kind of diffrent systems so even if it works for someone it DOESNT mean it works for everyone. So go with what you have until you HAVE to change.

I really like 10 but it still to many small issues with it to change in my opinion.

YES, sure did.. and leaving that crap store must be one of the best things i ever done.. even if it has nothing to do with this thread.

    Merry X-Mas everyone

Legit PA user here on Windows10.1 (major Nov. update), i'm rocking it for more than a month and from my real world usage i've got no problems with it. I don't listen to charts if my experience is great.

Whatever you got to say man, whatever you got to say. You're talking from assumptions and tech forum complains, i'm talking from real-world scenario usage. Go talk trash about Windows10 on music production once you're productively use it for more than at least 2 weeks.
Do you want me to film a "1 day in the life of Marianus of Rome?" and produce all day so you can see how fluently i can go through my working processes? Also i can mention all the VSTI/vsts i have so you can personally challange me to use the most uncompatible from your point of view, to see how many crashes i get? I can effortlessy bet on my setup anytime.

@OP you won't die testing it for yourself. You might like it or you might not, but at the end of the day your personal trial will help you more in your dilema.
