there is no better, all the personal expierences are just stories
in a sea of horeshit (sorry but its true)

the defining factors where and always are two fold
wich hardware and wich software are YOU going to use

    for instance(ces :)
if its Apogee & Logic : MAC
if its Soniccore and Samplitude/Sequoia (i think) :PC
if Its a Autodesk turnkey Sys its :Linux Redhat

you can get 4000 bucks mac desktop for 2000 bucks pc
just go to partspicker and get all the things you need (that the mac has) and you´ll see.
but you def lose some time and money if you want for instance
thunderbolt or firewire (or to be shure you "rme" will work with the board)
seldomly are the pc motherboards sold with good chips fo either of those
but you wont need the WS Graphix (so loads saved there)
and you won´t need ecc ram (only if you go over 48gb me thinks) again loads saved there)

    happy hunting :)

I must say that I'm quite impressed with the content of this thread. When I read the subject line I thought, oh well, here we go again . . . another vitriolic mud-slinging match between two sides determined not to give any real consideration to the other side. But there have been many very balanced and well explained points of view here. Score one for this forum and its members.

I too am thinking it'll be Hackintosh next for me.

For you hackintosh users/builders out there. I know some select computer parts can offer better stability when building a hackintosh, but I'm curious if ordering any computer parts of my preferred choice as long at they are compatible would still work the same? Or are you limited to choosing a certain cpu, a certain ram, videocard, etc...to get the best functionality?

Same here. It was refreshing to read mature and "grownup" opinions on this well-worn topic (for a change). No need to draw blood or take disrespectful shots at people who have differing opinions than you. Personally, I have both OS's (and love 'em both). I finally broke down and bought a new Mac about a year ago. Prior to that, I spent a few years fixing Mac hardware issues for clients and friends. However, I started building PC's for friends, relatives and clients over 15 years ago. There's something very satisfying about building a computer from scratch. Sort of like Dr. Frankenstein? <lol> Anyway, each of these babies have their own pluses and minuses (especially in the areas of audio, graphics and video production). In the end, it all depends on what you use your computer for.

Why you people always compare Apple's computers with non branded ones? (which do not have the same customer support and warranty, among others...). When putting an i7 in a hackintosh, there's nothing to compare to. Mac Pro's run on Xeons.

    So here it is:
    Apple's website: 6-core Xeon, 16 GB DDR, 2x3GB video cards, 256 GB SSD = $ 4,000
Dell's configurator for precision tower workstation: 6-core Xeon, 16 GB DDR, 2x4 GB video cards, 256 GB SSD = $5,413 but there is now discount on Dell's site and the final price is $ 4,060

Your configuration seems very interesting to me.

How do you feel about the noise caused by this system while running on high CPU/GPU usage ?

@Nightwalker : Step out of your universe for a little bit. Not all people know how to assembly and install OS X on a hackintosh platform (or have friends who do). And these people will buy a working machine out of the box.

to be honest my hackintosh doesnt make any noise on high CPU/GPU usage ,but if you are worry about noise you can buy a noiseless power supply and some noiseless fans.

    @jayxflash
sorry mate, but everybody is capable building a pc if not
a pro audio shop should be better
    like
    http://www.adkproaudio.com/choose2.asp
there is one on every continent ;)

as for the computer parts you chose, alright you got me there :)
but since i disgarded the ws class gfx and ram, why not disgard the xeons too
you should get a killer hex i7 for a third of the price + half of the price for a prosumer mb
that should cut 1k of and mabe a nice gtx for 250 and another grand is saved (maybe)

you buy what you really need and not what dell or apple tells you is what i´m saying
not this is better or not, either way is fine by me

    i like the mac notebooks
buut you can´t get a xeon and! a quadro/firepro on an mac notebook hehe

dont take it toooo serious, i just dislike.......... this is better because pc/mac/linux shit :)

Winner! Some folks don't understand that Apple is not in the budget computer market. Neither Apple nor its customers are comparing Macs to cheap PCs. They don't care about that market. Never have, never will.

The same holds true for, say, a MacBook Pro vs. a PC laptop. I recently saw a PC laptop (Windows, not Hackintosh related) which looked to be comparable to a MacBook Pro, spec-wise. The build quality looked good, too. Basically, it was up to my standards (aside from the OS) and if I need a PC laptop for some odd future reason, I would probably choose that one. Then I saw the price: $2800, which is $500 higher than the MacBook Pro I had been comparing it to.

When I see the 'Macs are overhyped and/or overpriced' nonsense, I have to remember that person isn't in the same market and would only be inconvenienced by reality.

first lets not compare apples to oranges :)
notebooks are inherently a different market but still

to really compare a mac pro
you must of course compare it to the real components

mac pro is a 3year old computer
the dell it was compared to is 2 genarations ahead in all of its main components

the workstation gfx is 300€ worth per unit not 1k
the xeon is 700 not 1500 (if you find it)
lets not go into the other components

thats why most people moan about Mac Pro
still is a good computer, but overpriced!

    notebooks are diffrent
    but still
if you really need performance you have to go with a specialist vendor either way

get a pc built, buy what you can afford, must have minimum 16gb ram, i7 processor, good power supply i,e 800 plus, middle graphics card, motherboard -asus i have used always... the money spent on these will get a good machine, i use ssd drive for all my big files otherwise hdd for all your folders, prefer a sdd for your main disk as well.....again built is best.....hope that helps
