so me and my friend both record and use alot of similar gear and what not. i was talking levels with him one day and i noticed his interface volume was about a 3rd lower then mine yet twice as loud.

we talked about it and i cant seem to figure out what could be my issue.

my pc levels are at 100%

    my monitors are at 0db

    daw is at 0db

    interface is at -28 db

    his was at -48db

i have to turn my interface all the way up to be even near the same volume has his.

any clues as to what my problem is??

I've had a similar situation with edirol soundcards, different drivers was the culprit (version and type!)

As Rhodes have already mentioned, many people overlook the importance of +4dBu vs. -10dBV, (capital B and V for Mr. Bell and Mr. Volta) even when recording, using hardware outboard gear, etc.

To cut a long story short, dB just uses a reference value to measure physical values, or rather set them into relation. dBu and dBV use different references.

indeed, thanks for the correction; I keep writing it the wrong way.
It must have happened somewhere in the past that I read it with small letters, and now it is hardcoded in my brains... let see if this time I will remember it :guru:
