I suppose your PC/MAC has a firewire port. So... plug the cable which fit both port. More info on M-Audio Solo manual.

    Note (inside the manual)

    IMPORTANT:
The FireWire Solo comes with a high-quality six-pin to six-pin FireWire cable. We strongly suggest you use this cable, or one of equal quality, for optimum audio performance. If your computer is equipped with a four-pin interface, you will need to use the included four-pin to six-pin FireWire cable. Note that the FireWire Solo requires a six-pin FireWire connection in order to supply bus power; if you have a four-pin connection you will need to use the supplied power adapter.

    Hi Medrewb,
The 6 pin to 6 pin is for the desktop computer and the 6 pin to 4 pin is for latops, where you need the adaptor.
The 6 to 6 provides the device with power, the 6 to 4 does not.
    And any adaptor will do...
I forgot the voltage ( I think it was 12V ), but 1000mA, and the plus has to be on the inside...
    That's it.
    Good luck.

You need a texas chip in you firewire 5 pin, do not need power.
The other port is to conect other firewire units.

I do not have the adapter so, if i use 1x 6-pin to 6-pin cable it is good to go?

You have to get the DC adapter or else the unit wont power on.The rest you could check after you power ON the unit.

Yes, you're fine with your 6 to 6 cable into your desktop, dude !
Your desktop will power the Firewire solo.
The 4 pin is there only for cameras etc...
But in your laptop with the 4 pin, you'll need the power supply....
