I hope they don't end up forcing this on you . . .

 

i loved waves plugins until 5 years ago. then something changed. smaller independent developers started to surface , creating cutting edge plugins for less money. i remember when i installed the whole mercury package only i few i used. very good plugs but personally i think there are equivalent or much better ones

 

Another great way to prevent piracy... by taking away customers rights.

'No installer, you only download what you have bought, from an unique interface'

In other words, you install the waves client, it connects to the server, detects you have bought 3 plug-ins, starts downloading them and installs them..

Now, imagine something : in 6 months, a big thing happens in Israel. Waves company are based in Israel. Suddenly, the servers or company got destroyed by an attack over the city.

Guess what ? Your gold or mercury bundle can no longer be downloaded, and you're good to start searching for some free plug-ins. Because you don't have any money left, after spending 1000 bucks on one waves bundle.

I Don't use any waves plug-in, but for those who do... R2R. .. SOS

 

future release of waves plugs are gonna depend on this ! if you don't have this installed plugs won't work . Yes a new piracy direction

 

Somebody with real experience in the scene needs to speak on this. What does it mean for future releases on the sister site? Are we stuck with v9 now for awhile? Or will this new protection mean game over?

 

I bet Waves 10 is around the corner and they are ready to implement these measures to ensure end to pirating it. There is hope to everything with this...in the video they mentioned downloads for offline install. So, Im sure its not the end of waves other than a group who cracks it for public release.

Personally I don't care, there's plenty of other great plug-ins out there. Waves are allowed to protect their IP anyway they see fit and if you don't like it, don't buy it.

Now then, which is the last working Waves release? I better download it and chuck it on a CDr as backup :D

I can see how they try to regain control over the licensing situation. But I am pretty sure that there will still be an offline installer availabe unless they are willillng to break good business relationships with the major pro studios where computers are offline so music can not get leaked as easy. But we will see.

Personally, I could live without most of the Waves plugins, except the SSL EQ. I just love that thing and didn't find a better replacement for it yet. Some of these Plugins are really really useful: CLA 2A, S1, Center, Doubler.

WAVES aren't the first doing this. Furthermore they already had a similar system (WOLI).
XLN-Audio, HOFA, Sonalksis and others use online&offline installers.

This is more and more adopted by (scary) developers.

 

The problem I have with Waves is that there are just too many similar plugins in the huge list and I forget about some of the good ones since I can't remember all the names so I end up not using a lot of them.
