CRITICAL compatibility warning with the upcoming Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan upgrade

    Dear XXXXX XXXXXXX,

Before upgrading to the latest version of Mac OS X – version 10.11 El Capitan, please consider these potentially serious issues concerning your KOMPLETE, TRAKTOR, and MASCHINE products. Two major issues have been identified:

    1. NI plug-ins do not pass the AUDIO UNITS validation in Mac OS X 10.11 – Logic Pro affected
In Mac OS X 10.11, Native Instruments AUDIO UNITS plug-ins will not pass the AU validation and will therefore not be available in Logic Pro. The root cause of this issue has been identified and a solution is currently being developed in close contact with Apple.

    2. Incompatibility with some older NI hardware
There are compatibility issues between some older NI devices and Apple’s upcoming operating system. This issue triggers a 'kernel panic' – this serious problem will crash the connected computer immediately, resulting in loss of any unsaved work, or serious disruption of a performance.

    The following hardware is affected:

    • TRAKTOR KONTROL S4 (MK1)
    • TRAKTOR KONTROL X1 (MK1)
    • TRAKTOR AUDIO 2 (MK1)
    • AUDIO 8 DJ
    • AUDIO 4 DJ
    • AUDIO 2 DJ
    • MASCHINE (MK1)
    • GUITAR RIG 3 (RIG KONTROL 3 hardware)
There are beta drivers already available that fix this issue. Updated drivers will be released as soon as they have been fully tested on OS X 10.11 – shortly after Apple releases OS X 10.11 to the public.

    Download the beta drivers here

To keep your system working normally with the affected products, we strongly recommend waiting before upgrading your computer to OS X 10.11 El Capitan until these issues have been fully solved by either Native Instruments or Apple.

Stay up to date on all future developments regarding Mac OS X 10.11 compatibility here

    Thank you for your attention,

    The Native Instruments team

    In other words:

Fuck El Capitan. Im still on 10.9.5 and loving it. Before i was forced by Logic X 10.1 to update to 10.9.5 i was well happy at 10.8.whatever for years. Yosemite shit on OSX systems. El Capitan will be no better.

Might hold off. Many Many Audio interface devices are reportedly not working yet. Apple has crapped around with security so much that it will take a while for the devs to catch up.

Well, this stuff is to be expected whenever a new version (so-called "upgrade") of an OS is released, and is why it's stupid – no, frickin' stupid – to early-adopt a new OS: just opting for Apple to download the new OS over all one's software that was running just-fine on the extant OS. The increasing frequency with which Apple releases new desktop/laptop OS versions – mostly due of forcing compatibilty with the ever-updating iPhone/iPad OS, which is like getting two different species to interbreed – is all about Apple, not about the users of the OS. Yosemite was publicly released on October 15, 2014. When's 10.12 due out – February, 2016?

Apple can't even be bothered with plugging (let alone detecting, let alone preventing) security holes in and further improving 10.10 as is customary with ongoing refinement of an OS – they now just release a whole new version. The solution might be to not encourage Apple by adopting the new version of the OS – but apparently people do, without testing the water with their toes before just jumping in and hoping they can swim in it. Then developers "have to" keep up, forcing upgrades for the sake of compatibility, leaving users of older (what – 2, 3 years old, yet?) OS versions behind.

Where was it on Audiosex that someone, if not more than one person, had suggested that Apple have an OS expressly for prosumer audiovisual production; which wouldn't be upgraded so often, so that software wouldn't be force-deprecated so frequently? The moves from PC to Intel and 32-bit to 64-bit were significant and welcome, but I'm on Logic and Native Instruments; I don't even want to own a damn iPhone.

It's becoming an issue for people willing to use OSX.
WinXP and win7 have integrated years of improvements.
With OSX, you don't even have a version (be it older) that was developed and maintained for more than around 9 months.

The nomenclature of mac os is kinda funny. It's still os x, right? And yet, it's not downward compatible? What's up with that? Makes you wonder...

Why do I feel that most of the negative comments about the OSX here are coming from non-OSX users? :)

I absolutely disagree. This should not be "expected". I had no where near these sort of problems with any OSX upgrade since Jaguar. Stuff may have been a little off, or needed a workaround, but audio and Logic continued to work for the most part. I am very disappointed that Apple took this direction to make so many dev's scramble for fixes that will likely be months for many of them.

Wow... get a grip. This OSX upgrade isn't released yet. If you will use a beta stage software as a production OS, expect some trouble. How the f... is that critical ?
It's like going in the restaurant to order a cake. Take the cake out of the oven with your bare hands and complaining how your hand are burned and the cake sucks.

I don't know about anyone else...but my mac pro machine is working perfectly and so is my current yosemite osx. No one has put a gun to my (or anyone's) head to upgrade. And I won't. I'll wait 6 months. And when I do, it will be a stable osx. Problem solved.

May be you could read my old thread about this subject. All about "Apple f*cks pro/power users" was already written.
And those problems are going to be worse every year.
Apple push a new free update every year, like iOS, to keep those two OS "linked" by their services.
Do you REALLY think third party software makers are going to follow crappy Apple OSX updates every year ? No way.
You want stability and compatibility ? Stay with 1/2 years "old" OSX version.

    They don't give a f*ck about pro/power users.
    Apple started by making computers.
Now, a Mac is considered (by Apple) as an iPhone accessory and "just" another product in their Apple world. Apple is no more a computer maker : it is a service seller, with dedicated hardware attached to it. Apple sell a LOT more iPhones than Macs.

I already said in this thread (and it is one year old) Enjoy !
And when i said "soon", i didn't realized it was one single year

i really think people over exaggerate things. i never really have had significant trouble with OS X upgrades even in beta. it isn't really that bad. and devs get loads of time to get things ready, granted every year is a bit tedious for them.
anyway you don't have to upgrade! i mean i am still on old windows 7 for my pc, because new windows aren't exactly always great!

It is only the beginning. How many bugs from previous OS versions still there two years after ?
And as Apple push ppl to upgrade, they don't fix problems on their previous version : they just tell you to upgrade.
Mavericks Extended support ends in 2016
    Good luck with this...

OK, after giving it a little thought and gathering some information, I made the OS X update to El Capitan. Ran the csrutil disable straight after the first successful login, kept the auvaltool from Yosemite and kept a backup of com.apple.audiounits.cache.

My busy projects in Logic Pro X work fine, no crashes no freezes - the plugins (NI, Arturia, Roland, Waves) work just fine. 32 Lives OK, Traktor works fine too.

Currently (re)installing MacPorts (since El Capitan cleaned up it's core folders and some stuff must be reinstalled). I had a 3rd party firewall app which also requires reinstall but Ive decided to use the OSX's firewall.

So this pretty much sums up my first couple of hours with El Capitan. It was lots of fuss, mainly due to the fact that companies wouldnt or couldnt disclose the simple solution: boot into recovery mode and type csrutil disable in Terminal, then boot normally.

For everybody with special periferrals and/or audiocards that may have compatibility issues, just wait for the driver update to be released. For the rest of us, the update is pretty safe to make.
