6 Ways Drumming Heals Body, Mind And Soul

  1. From slowing the decline in fatal brain disease, to generating a sense of oneness with one another and the universe, drumming's physical and spiritual health benefits may be as old as time itself.

Subconsciously, this is why I still play the drums.
Consciously, it's still alot of fun (especially in a band).

Yes absolutely. People learned that through drumming entrainment can be achieved, probably first noticed by mothers with their babies. The music and melodies of nature are also amazing.

True! And a Drum was my first ever instrument.
Combined with a Didgeridoo (learn to play the circular breathing technique)
it's an astral-experience...you reconnect to Earth and its powers without any
need of drugs, alcohol or any damaging stuff.

Some of the weirdest things have happened to me while playing drums.

    - I was at a park that has a big flood tunnel. Brought my field recorder and big Native American drum. I was sitting in front of the tunnel jamming, and when I was done, I turned around, and there was an owl sitting there on the ground 10 feet from me just staring. We just looked at eachother for a couple minutes. Then I started playing the drums again for him, and he was nodding his head to the beat. Ever since then, that owl has followed me around the neighborhood. He sits outside my bedroom some nights and hoots.

-Another time, I was playing the same drum in my garage. All of a sudden, the TV comes on by itself, and there is some sort of voodoo ceremony going on. Our drums were synced up, and this chick was sacrificing a chicken. While this was happening I had super skills, but only while the ceremony/sacrifice thing was going on. Afterwards, I went back to being terrible.:drummer:

WTF is up with this drum!?

-Another time, I was camping. Was beatboxing for a while, then layed down to go to bed. There is a hole in the top of the tent, and I look through it, and there is a bald eagle at the top of the tree right above me. It starts clicking and clacking, just like beatbox hihats and snares. This is 5 seconds after I'm done beatboxing. Then I hear this high frequency sound moving through the trees coming my direction, and the full sound of another eagle in the distance arrives.

  9. @arhythmtech I love when stuff like that happens to me. One needs be an open vessel for experiences like these and cherish the moments of these special invitations, but you know what I mean.
The first drum is our mother's heartbeat which sooths us, nurtures and an reminds us of the we have returned to flesh and are all members in the band of life. Our own hearts connect us all with the inherent knowledge that we are all drummers looking to sync up with the universal heart.

  10. @Kookaboo...I saw Adam Plank here in Basel a bunch of years ago when he gave a convert/clinic at the old and great venue The Elizabethan Church. He was amazing.

Does air drumming count as one? lol

Seriously, I'm not an avid drummer but I like to use some pro tools to tighten my drums exercise.

I love this thread, many people believe that music (or drums, as we are relating it here) have ability/ and or connection of more than what we hear with our ears.

and yes devilorcracker, I think air drumming is a perfect example of this.. like the air drummer in the car next to us at a stop light. you may see him tapping on his steeringwheel and wonder if he has any rhythm, but to him, hes obviously quite connected to what the song is saying. or just in the moment. great stuff

Some people say the 1st word was probably "om". I say it was probably "Boom lakka lakka, boom lakka lakka ".

Listening to your mother's heart for 9 months does that to you. We are all minimal techno babies when we are born.

You know why the sound of waves hitting the shore/beach is comforting and soothing? The frequency of 7 seconds (median of the world oceans) are roughly the same frequency of breaths while sleeping.
