The right speaker in my Audio-Technica ATH-M50x stopped working.

Edit: The headphones were covered by a 1 year warranty and have been sent back to get fixed. I was given a replacement pair so will never know what the problem was.

1 year warranty? no? Get some focal spirit pros next ;)

 

I have one, but u need to be gentle with them cause generally they have breaking problem with plastic rim. (Google it)
Sennheisers are good choice for built quality and sound quality .

When things like headphones break, do you just give up?

Don't you fix it? Superglue, liquisole, solder, re-solder, new cables, new plug, new pads, etc!

I had a pair of AKG k270s for about 13 years. They were used almost daily and I knew them through and through (sound-wise and construction-wise). They probably got fixed 20 times and cleaned twice as often (by me).

 

"hey my model just broke so all of them must be bad".

Don't get me wrong, it plain _sucks_ for you so you have a right to be angry, but I know thousands of happy 50x users are saying 'do not care'

 

I have the original and also the new M50X version. The originals are about 5 years old and have been oft times semi abused with floor falls and backpack squishes. After swapping out the old pads for the new they feel and sound as fresh as the day I bought them (after a 30 hour breaking in period). The newer ones might sound a bit wider and deeper than the older and seem built to last the same as my older pair. I have listened through them in the rain and in the snow, in temperature over 40 degrees and in deep sub zero enviorments. They have never let me down.

 

Ok after trying all all cables (it comes with 3) one of them fixed the problem. I then tried the older cable and that works now to. Don't know what the problem was and if it will come back but as Aggrotech said it's covered by a 1 year warranty which i was unaware about. Thanks for all your help guys!

Edit: It just stuffed out again. Time to return them

This guy is my fucking hero!!! 13 years!!! Im up to 5 with my ATH-M50's... Hopefully I can make it to 10...

 

I don't think there is a reason for bashing a brand on basis of a few faulty examples. AT is well known for audio quality. But as probably in any other company, they using cheaper materials more and more. Is just financial situation we are going through now. Value of $ unit is worth less and less and even the most renowned companies in the world, known for their quality, will be forced to use cheaper material more and more, which will fail from time to time, despite company quality control. Of course i'm talking about mainstream affordable products. Also i don't own any of AT product.

 

Looks like a cable problem - that is easily fixable provided you have a soldering iron.

 

The ATH-M50 is unique among the fold of closed swivel-cupped headphones for a few very important reasons, and if you would like to join the prestigious 10+ Year Users Club there are websites wholly devoted to the rituals and rites that need be performed in order to be initiated into The Society, many of them secrets that only the Founders and their clans are privy to. Part of the Black Web, these sites are secret and are unlisted in any search engine. And although I put myself and family at risk for even the mere mention of any of this, feel it important to let the uninitiated and novice user also have what up to this point has been secret and unattainable knowledge.

To begin with, after purchase do not under any circumstance unbox your new cans unless you are alone. The imprinting on the psyche of the unit with you as primary user is crucial to the developement and longevity of the M50X . Headphones such as the ATH-M50 and other closed back members of it's ilk belong to the class of electronics commonly referred to as "Close Wire Grouped", that is, "those components that require direct contact with their user in order to function as intended by the manufacturer (quoted from Jacob Meyer's renouned book "Transistor Dreams Volume 1, "Circuits and the Circle of Life"). Under no circumstance throw away the packaging that the phones came with. A trust must be established between you and the headphones, and destroying in front of your phones what up to this point has been a safe and secure womb for them, their nest, would be disasterous and ill found notion with the consequence of greatly diminishing the lifespan of what will become your partner and friend. It is advised to store the packaging in plain sight of the headphones for no less than 3 weeks. This gives them a chance to acclimate to their new and strange surroundings and to help give them a stable footing for what can be a lifetime of enjoyment in the service of art and the joys that fellowship can muster.

Just a update:

I returned the headphones to the store i got them from and they replaced them on the spot and sent the other ones away to get fixed so i will never actually know what the problem was although what Andrew said is probably right.

You are right. They are a good company and make good headphones for the price range. I had a bad day and threw my toys out the cot with this one haha. Changed the title to something more appropriate.

the old ones(that i have)don't have jacks for the cables and are stable and have no issues !the new ones have jacks and all the problems !

 

Yes, my only issue with the new version has to do with the cables. They seem cheap, and to probably perform optimally might need to be replaced with ones of higher quality wire and jacks. Also, my old originals have that nice spring where the cable meets the input jack and have saved destruction from bending at the the cable origin many number of times. The X version is lacking this extra. Can't fault the sound though. kimikaze is correct on the future of manufacturing as well as in the present, unfortunately.

 

AT is cheap for what you get, so obviously you are saving money on the build quality. Just be a bit more careful when handling them

PS I dropped mine a few times and they are still working

 

I have a pair too! No problems after a year. Amazing sound, great mixes on them, translate well to many other systems. You just need to get used to the top end of the spectrum a bit.
