0:54 that big wall of sound. He uses it in other songs, usually in the half-tempo sections such as pre-choruses.

    0:40 similar sound

EDM wizards, how do we make this sound?

    2 sections:
    1) Bass. Something like saw + noise and access virus ti rectifier distortion module.
    2) saws played with chords. Many layers. Nexus and etc...

Anton uses this alot. I like it too. He even upped it a bit on I Want You To Know, making it almost like a rock song (or could very likely be played by a rock/metal band).

Bass: Monophonic saw wave (two OSC stacked in two different octaves) -> EQ (HPF, mid boost, LPF) -> distortion -> EQ (boost and cut to taste and to fit the track). Parallel process by sending this processed chain and mix it in with the clean version of the bass synth (or another "bass synth" playing the exact same midi and is in phase).
You can also highpass this overall layered sound (remove the very low end), and layer it with a low sine synth that is ducked/side-chain compressed to the kick.

Layered with wide supersaw chords and layered leads, bascally.

Edit: Vowel phaser in Spire is pretty awesome for this growly bass sound (pre-dist). You can also use formant filters.

Yeah, and here is the one of the whole project (which still doesn't reveal much of how the sound/sounds got created):

How on earth did you guys get access to the sessions?

I can't get my head around how someone decides to layer 30 virtual instruments on top of each other to make a particular sound. What is the thought process behind this decision? Surely you don't sit at your desk, think of a sound in your head and automatically know which 30 plugins that you'll need to stack in order to achieve the sound.

After years of experimenting and messing around, you kinda do, I once spend 6 months making one bass and there's other one I can't get how I want since 2007 even today, I'm close tho :suicide:

But in that process, I stumbled upon various interesting results and abused all my tools, had dreams/nightmares about it and so on, so you hear the sound and you make a plan how to get it, that's why it's good to really know your stuff

I love the Major 7/Flat 5 chord at 1:37 of "I Will Find You"... Nice to hear it in contemporary music again... thank you Anton.

You do that by experimenting until you get the sound you like/want

Zedd posted it on his twitter.

As said, that comes with experience. Once you get to a certain point you can "see" the sound in your head and dissect it into layers, and re-create it.

You might think a synth lead in a favorite track of yours is just one synth, when it might be layered 3-10 times (with a bunch of DSP on each). There might even be layers in different octaves, different frequency ranges (complementing each other), etc. One synth layer might just have all wet reverb on it, mixed with a totally different sounding (clean) synth layer, etc etc.
I don't think you need as many as 30 layers though (wherever you got that from). But I know some of my projects are really "scroll heavy". I Thank the DAW god for folder tracks.

But layering is a big part of sound design, may it be basses, pads, leads, drums, kicks, snares, vocals, sound effects, game/movie/Foley sound design, etc etc.

What kind of production setup are you using? Software, hardware, a combination? What DAW, etc…

I unfortunately do not have any hardware and only use software plugins. I produce in Cubase 5 and mainly use Sylenth1. I love this plugin above everything else and can work extremely well with it. On the odd occasion I might use Nexus2 or Omnisphere, but I mostly use Sylenth1 – even for some percussion. I am its greatest fan!

Good info. But still a bit irrelevant, like saying what paint/brushes/canvas to use in order to paint like Salvador Dali.

    Sure! I meant no disrespect.
It would be awesome to see/hear him explain his thoughts and process behind the sounds. The (remix) stems I have of a few of his tracks reveals quite alot of info, but not all.

I'd be very interested to see them if you don't mind sharing.

The reason I'm taking an interest in this musician/producer's writing process is that I want to learn from the best. At 27 I simply don't have time to blindly play around with random plugins and slowly learn how to make them work in a limited capacity. The reason I say that is because I spend way too long on my first EP and have half recorded songs that were going to be used for the second EP just sitting there so I really need to get my shit together. The one benefit of all this time away from music is that I now have a completely different perspective on the songs I was going to record and i'm excited to explore new ideas (ie. EDM) that will help me break out of the monotony I was stuck in previously. I can't wait to write music that's fresh!
