My first pick would be iZotope Alloy 2.
It's an amazing plugin for many applications from dynamics, including multiband, eq, saturation to de-essing and more. It comes with loads of presets for many styles of music as starting points.

 

i found alloy 2 not good. trust me.

I don't know fab filter Q for eq , and Flux StereoToolV3 is the beast and it's completly free plugin

I usually stick to EQing (fabfilter) and a limiter at the end of the chain. When the low/low mids are still muddy despite EQing, a bit of multiband compression does wonders. Saturation really depends on the mix and should be used responsibly xD.

Then i like to export the track and process it entirely through Nebula plugins to emulate a real console. Even if I don't change any settings, just processing through nebula usually brings a lot of clarity to the mix.

 

Maybe some facts to support that assertion might enable trust rather than just a dismissive comment.

What exactly is not good about it then?

Have you guys tried HOFA's IQ-EQ? It's supposed to be a game-changer specially for non experts like me, but I don't know if its really worth trying.

I know what you mean, multiband compressors are scary shit. I still have no clue what the hell I'm doing with multiband compressors ^^. Izotope's compressor has a lot of presets so I usually start off with a preset that goes in the right direction and I tweak it from there

But, I would rather trust my ears
I've been using Alloy 2 since its release and it works just perfect for me on almost everything. Of course it's not going on every track of the mix, but I do use it very often. Like thantrax said: Swiss Army Knife.
From IK Multimedia, I choose their CLA2A
Klanghelm stuff, I only used their compressor and its very impressive.

 

I suggest that before you worry about plugins that you learn more about Mastering first,a good start would be Mastering Audio - The Art and the Science by Bob Katz

 

Multiband compression is simply multiple compressors in one unit--with each processing a specific frequency range. Think of it as 4 compressors in one. One for the low end, one for low mids, one for high mids, and one for highs. Your master has some low end that needs taming? Multiband compress it!

BTW, I'm a big fan of Alloy 2 (and iZotope in general--except that T-Pain shit).

 

Besides eq and comp I find fabfilter saturn and BBE harmonic maximizer very useful!!

Then you should know to stay away from plugins if you can. a transparent signal path using hardware will always give you better results. But to get back to all this software talk, the Mastering studio I used to intern at only had a few of them, Algorithmix, PSP and a few Waves Plugs. Everything else was hardware

 

Agree on Mixdown part, you can polish a turd but it's still a turd
