'ello everyone, hope you're all ready for the weekend :)

I'm working on a pop music project with someone and, whilst it's a genre I like to listen to - it's certainly not something I have a lot of production experience in. I wondered if anyone had any ideas where I might be able to get some cool "pop" music sounding drums? One of the issues I have is that I've spent so long making underground dance music style kicks and snares that I'm pretty shit at at making nice pop sounding things.

I know that "pop" is a wide description but I'm looking at Katy Perry, Lights and y'know, Max Martin-esque stuff.

Can anyone help with any suggestions? :)

I'll be honest, I've no idea what 'pop' drums sound like, but EZdrummer do Pop! EZX and Number 1 Hits EZX kits, maybe they're worth a look?

isnt most pop now just house or trap variations with a catchy pop melody over them?

I highly recommend getting some 80s sample packs from Zenhiser. They have some really good samples and some of their packs are geared towards pop, particularly their 80s samples which as you may or may not know was an especially fertile period for music production. I even use those samples myself and process to taste for Industrial music so they're very dynamic. It will definitely be something that is good to have in the arsenal and I have no doubt that you can construct some great tracks that way. :drummer:

My go to choice when I need pop drums is usually the Session kit in Studio Drummer for Kontakt. Alternatively Studio Pop or the Vintage Dry kit in Addictive Drums.

    Hey Pete,
I'm surprised I'm gonna say this, but... get some of the Maschine Expansions (here or u know where)! Something like Lilac Glare or Neon Drive should be right up your alley.
They're rather heavily processed already, but with you saying that you're not too familiar with making things sound "Pop", this might be a plus. Also, you'll get by with minimal processing afterwards (freeing your CPU to go crazy with that supersaw :) )

Bonus Tip: Don't hesitate to use your limiter on individual tracks for that extra oomph. It's a "must" for kick and snare, but really anything goes. (production advice from a friend working @ Universal in Berlin)
