    Hi,
let me introduce you superb open source software that is blazingly fast in searching files and folders called NTFS Search. Search takes place directly in MFT which is preloaded into RAM upon program start.
Let's say I'm looking for stiff_j_ooo_* sample set (from Angelic Voices 2). Windows search would take at least 10 minutes.
NTFS-Search is done in under 1 second:

Also when opening a file, the program offers you even a bit more advanced feature - open command prompt in that directory along with standard file/folder operations.

It's quite old software (last update 2009), but it's working fine in Win7 and shouldn't have an issue with Win8+
    Check it out: http://sourceforge.net/projects/ntfs-search/files/

May I suggest a better alternative?
It basically does the same thing, but has a more powerful search options like optional path inclusion and regular expressions.
And it's still maintained for both Win32 and Win64.

I've been using it for years on NTFS drives and it's called Everything.

I think Total Commander and such used a similar approach. But this one is a little faster
    Thanks !

PS : there was a trick too, to erase a folder full of everything, in 1 second. If i find it, i post it

Hey guys, would these two options include some sort of indexing? That search speed is amazing!

Yes, files (and at least with "Everything" also folder names) are indexed, hence the speed.
Both are not universal solutions because they only support NTFS.

For FAT/FAT32/exFAT/HFS and the like there are other desktop search solutions.
I'm using a few freeware tools to catalog and search those (external drives, DVDs, USB sticks) as well.

Not only that, Spotlight also writes on your SSD like there's no tomorrow.
I disabled it too and I'm working with some simple commandline tools now for finding stuff, not too bad either.
