Hey guys! I'm new to S1. Coming from Sonar. Giving S1V3 a shot. Digging it so far. When I watch the tutorial videos it seems I am missing a box on the very top left of the screen. I have the parameter box and the hand tool, but i don't have the control box that i see in all the videos. So mapping isn't working. Also, when i go to the external midi device options (from the mixer view) - I see the keyboard but there is NO MIDI learn function and i see that it's supposed to be there. Are there any expert s1 users that can please help me with this? I would like to take the full advantage of the midi mapping. I am using an AKAI MPK49 and when I turn knobs and faders they DO work on synths, etc - but I seem to have no way to specifically MIDI map something to the keyboard or MIDI Learn.

Thank you so much in advance

First Step install your keyboard (most of them should work anyway). Your model is listed.
I suggest you to leave "default instrument input" box unchecked.

Second step learn how mapping works in Studio One. I have done a video for v2 but will work in v3 too. hope it helps

The keyboard seemed to install fine. Automatically. Then I tried what u suggested. I removed it from external devices, and went to add it again. I did not select default. Still, there is no MIDI Learn function in External Devices and still no Control Box in the main timeline view. For example, in your video - as soon as it starts...top left of screen, there are 2 black boxes. One is for parameter and the other is for control. I only have the box on the left (parameter) - I DO NOT have the second box....That, coupled with no MIDI Learn functionality and I'm having trouble with any specific mapping... Thanks so much for your reply and help. I greatly appreciate it. I definitely understand how it all works, just can't seem to get those functions to show up for me :dunno:

Hm, what is your display resolution?

Afaik I've Seen something similar before. You say you only see the left box, so you need more space to make the right box visible.

Plenty of space. Tried both monitors (one screen is much bigger) ... still nothing. and still no MIDI Learn either. I don't get it

I figured it out! I added it as a keyboard... I ALSO had to add it as a CONTROL SURFACE, and use the same I/O . Bam! Midi learn works. Still dont have control box (2) , but dont need it now. I also see that in Mostwest's post his top pic of v3 doesn't have it either. Thanks for your help guys. Hope this post helps someone else cuz its kinda confusing having to add it twice but now I see why. One acts as the keyboard and the other acts as the control surface.

Depends on resolution, i had to remove the macro thing to get the second box wich i don't use anyway. Like in the video i prefer link parameters from plugins GUI instead of the main boxes

Thanks so much for that. Curious, how did you remove the macro icon? Really Appreciate the help. Just trying to learn the ins and outs of the software properly. Now if I could just figure out a way to non-destructive record audio I'll be set. I've seen using takes, but while recording - it will not blend the audio and play both. *in sonar its called Sound-on-sound recording. You can record audio right on top of another region and still have both (or several) regions play at the same time without deleting the audio under it. If I can figure out how to do this in S1 - I think I'll be covered.

Glad to hear you got it sorted out, had a similar drama today with a new impulse keyboard

Is there any way to archive/inactivate tracks in S1? In sonar its called "archive" track. In PT, its called "make track inactive". Couldn't find in manual or on forums. Only transform audio. Looking for a way to make certain tracks inactive so they don't use cpu, but remain in the timeline. Thanks so much

You should check in the add-on menu and disable it (wich i don't suggest you). You should also check for recording settings and change to record overdub. check out for v2 (pdf) or v3 manual.

I don't think that this feature exist in Studio One, if you haven't alrady done you should check out Logic Pro X. Most feature you request are present in Logic. Studio one aim is to keep things fast and easy (atleast for now).

I think the best you can do is mute the track and make it disappear from track list.

thanks for the help guys! Figured best way to inactivate is to make a new layer - then the first audio is inactivated. not as easy as sonar but not really a biggie. I like to render vocals etc to busses and then archive the raw vocal in case i need it later, then hide it (similar to hide and inactivate in PT), but make sure its using no cpu. As far as the sound-on-sound thing, i see there is a PER-TRACK box for "Play Overlaps". this sort-of works, as it at least plays both layers at once. It still will only play 1 layer while recording, though. Again, no biggie. Can just use auto punch I suppose. I saw around the forums that there still is no Global FX bypass yet. I use that frequently in Sonar, and I've seen several requests for it so maybe in a later update. Until then, just enjoying playing around and learning. Thanks again!
