Hi guys, I don't have access to main main desktop(win7 & osx 10.9) for the next few days. I have installed Win 8.1 on my laptop just to see how things works. One of the biggest mistakes of my entire life: video card not detected, Google chrome crash on start, ridicolous tablet interface, 5 crash in 10 minutes. The worst O.S. on my entire life. Thanks God i should go back to my main pc in the next week. So shall i remove Win 8.1 and install again Win 7 or try to fix everthing here?? Really don't know

ps: Why Microsoft is working on win 10 when this release is so bad?!?

Before installation i runned the compatibily thing and everything was ok. How people with ATI video card manage this situation?? Thanks

Sounds like a bad install to me. Did you do a clean install? Can you boot into safemode so you can update your GPU drivers and all other drivers for 8.1? CPU is it AMD or Intel?

8.1 isn't bad it's more the problem with your laptop and install. I use windows 8.1 everyday for about a year and half on one of my pc's and it's flawless. Intel/Nvidia

From my experience (both OSX & Win user) since Vista, Windows got just better. 7 was better that Vista. I did not noticed any speed improvement from 7 to 8 to 8.1 but my 8.1 works perfectly fine. No crashes, no driver issues, nothing. Same with Yosemite on the Mac side. As Spacely mentioned, most likely you did a bad install or you had a bad Win installer source. Really don't need to blame MS on this, their OS is doing fine :)

    Hi Mostwest  ,

I understand that you're pissed off by your bad experience with Windows8.1, but as Spicely and Jayxflash confirmed, i must agree with them and mention that my Windows 8.1 works flawlessly too. So i think you shouldn't blame the O.S. and call it "The Worst" when it's a device/user-related problem. Imagine you would cook the greatest dish in the world and you serve it to a stunner in your kitchen but something happens and it gets stuck into her throat and almost dies, does that mean your dish is to blame? I don't think so..
    You get the idea :mates:

Guys really i'm installing OS since '98. This is a fresh installation. Installed also classico shell. No improvements. The gui is worser: 1 window is colored while Others are white...
I have installed everything in this Lap, really everything. This the first Tim that the system freeze while loading windows 6 times out of 10. Not to mention the Google Chrome thing. It just crash at start without reason.
It's probably something between me and the latest release from Microsoft. There is a way to remove the gadget in the sidebar and the Tablet page?

    Ati users help me

how old is your laptop? (and what make/model?) that could be the reason for 8.1 not working correctly after install

Win 8.1 x64 works like a charm on my 5 years old HP laptop with 3 GB of RAM (yes, it's odd).

Also: When upgrading to 8.1, it allowed me to use some Kontakt libs that I was unable to use in Win 7 (CPU and disk managed in a much more efficient way on 8.1).

No idea what could be wrong in your laptop: Maybe it's older than mine?

I think you need manufacturer specific drivers. Graphics card and intel graphics tend to only like the ones on the websites

Safe to say you're kinda alone in this, specially if you blame an OS on driver troubles :). 'Start to desktop' mode is easy enough to enable and get rid of the tablet interface, and install classic shell or something if you need an old-style start menu. Chrome didn't have a single crash here. It's safe to say you have some kind of driver trouble. Try running on the supplied driver that the installer picks (so NOT installing anything else) should be fine. I have an older mobile ATI card with a driver that was not made for Windows 8 / 8.1, and has been running fine for ages now.

I'm not sure I get you right. so you:
-installed the os on a clean, empty primary partition with no os whatsoever installed on any other partitions
-did not upgrade an existing installation
    -installed tons of software
-then the system froze for the first time, and now it freezes 60% of the time

    Is that correct?

No, clean installation. At the first boot it's stop at the loading page at the Windows logo.
Restarted and installed google chrome. And that it. Nothing more.

This is a 3 years old laptop. The problem is related to ati cards and windows 8.1 . But the compatibily software was ok on everything. They should fix the app before someone makes my mistake. Since none of the ATI user replay to this ati card shouldn't work with 8.1 and 10. Also my main desktop (3 years old) runs an ATI video card. It's strange because I can install Osx 10.10 and latest Linux distros but not windows latest release. I'll ask a friend of mine to create a USB installation of 7. Thanks everyone for the replays. I should be able to get a mac as next machines tired of Microsft choice in general. Wich is probably just me since you guys seem like a lot the product. Win7 licenses owner (like me) should be able to get a license of win10 for free that's why I tried 8.1 just to get feel how things should go for next Win release.

On my desktop PC (i7 2600K, 16 GB DDR) I have a 5-year old ATI card (4000 or 5000 series, don't recall exactly). No problems whatsoever in Win 8.x, most of the games (the ones that run on DirectX 10) work with no additional ATI driver installation.

Good thing you don't hope for stability or bug freedom. Being tired of Microsoft in general seems to me the only plausible reason to join the cult. :)

Good news! They should - and they will! :mates:

I'd slow down with the Win10 upgrades if I were you. It's likely you'll lose your valid Win7 license in the process of product key upgrade. Then there's no way back. So far Win10 proved to be very unstable and a RAM hog (4.6GB/16GB with only Waterfox open).
Definitely try Win10 first before 'upgrading' your keys. *yes*

Overall I had similar issues with Win8.1 - crashed on 3 different machines. Everything was much slower, and there is no option to switch to Windows Classic theme and completely disable all visual effects.
Metro requires HW acceleration, so it's another performace/consumption taxing feature.

With previous release windows installed automatically detect my ATI and installed driver. Now with 8.1 isn't detected. I tried also to check HP site in order to get windows driver, and win8.1 isn't listed. So I tried on the Ati site. Downloaded latest Ati Catalyst Control Center but no luck.

Can you check if Win8.1 is using your Ati video card or the built-in card? Mine isn't even detected. And what kind of series it's yours? Mine is HD Radeon 5000, wich is quite a common model. Thanks

Check your hardware with special tools :
    -hard drive with maker tools
    -RAM with Mem86
-CPU charge and GPU with OCCT
    -power supply stability
    ...

It's easier to get a full working hackintosh (took me only 15 minutes.and everything runs great since than) on a PC than get working Windows latest versions.
