After much procrastination I have devised a plan to create a 15 minute set to be performed in front of a live audience. Here is my plan and I hope it works - I am posting here because I know its not perfect..and I need all the help I can get :beg:

At the center will be a Laptop (win7) connected to a Motu Micro Book II (its not mine though) and it will be also connected to a 25 Key Midi Controller with pads and knobs via USB. A microphone (via Motu) will go to a channel in Live9/SonarX2 with Vocal effects. I will have my Bass guitar in the other input of the Motu but it will go through a DI > Processor and finally a Novation LaunchPad (I am yet to order this) for controlling the basic structure of the tracks.

The monitor outs 1/2 and 3/4 will be sent to the PA mixer..

The following things I will play live -

All main vocals (melodies will be printed on the drum tracks - not taking chances here!)
Some bass guitars (rest of the bass will be synth loops)
Some synth parts with live automation on the keyboard..

Now my question is..IS this POSSIBLE? I haven't tried it at home yet..If this is possible only then I will buy the Novation LaunchPad..

I have arranged some tracks that I can do live with a bass guitar hanging on the shoulders but the problem is with not being able to fetch the arrangement nicely..will a launch pad help? (there are only 4 pads in the keyboard)..I want to control my drum tracks in a very easy way so that if I want to play a bass solo over 16 bars I must be able to change the drums very fast without anyone noticing..Also at any given point of time I must be playing something or turning some knobs..Thats extremely important.. *yes*

If anyone can help plz do..!! :)

    [/size]

note - i watched some videos but most of those talk about DJ setups or band setups..this is sadly a one man show :(

It's easy to pretend to be turning some knobs or playing an instrument .. just don't plug them in

Unfortunately I can't help with the other stuff as I have never played through a computer live.

Yes, it is possible to perform a one man show using what you have. There are many touring bands that use Live 9, and/or other DAW's, for triggering sounds and complete arrangements. Adrian Belew comes to mind first and foremost - look him up and check out his live rig setup.

I am not at all familiar with Sonar X2 so I can't really comment on that part of your setup.

Why don't you just use Live 9 for everything? Correct me if I am missing something but I am pretty sure it would simplify things.

I would advise first setting your rig up at home and making sure it all works flawlessly prior to any gig - although I'm sure you've figured that out already.

I don't know what kind of 25 key MIDI controller you have but from my knowledge you should, depending on what kind you have, be able to pull it off with that.

Why not create your arrangements for each song in Live 9 first - that way you can trigger the next song with one key or pad on your controller?

You should be able to fetch the arrangement for each song in between songs as in queuing them up.

    Hopefully that helps you some.

thanks BigEmptySky.......i didnt know about Adrian Belew uptil now..i am going to check his setup asap

anyways a gentleman here msgd me and told me to send the bass guitar directly to PA mixer and the Vocal microphone through direct outs 3/4 bypassing the Master in Live9..

About Sonar, well its the Matrix view..its very easy to use..I am relatively new to Ableton though I tried it first in 2004 i guess..but then i got busy with a band and now i am here again!!

my 25key controller is this one -

Here is the link for both a video and article on Adrian Belew's current setup using Ableton Live from December 2014:

    http://www.premierguitar.com/articles/21784-rig-rundown-adrian-belew

Just part of the article pulled what I thought you would be interested in: "MOTU UltraLite Mk3 Hybrid audio interface feeds a laptop running Ableton Live. Belew uses Ableton for all his loops and other audio “snippets” that he triggers during the show".

The pic you posted is from his 2010 setup - what a monster rig hey?

Here via YouTube from 2014: Adrian Belew Gear Tour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sv3BGqKURZ4

I don't have any experience with the Novation Launch Pad, sorry.

The Graphite 25 MIDI controller should be able to handle all your MIDI switching and triggering for you with both Sonar and Live. You would have to find the programmable MIDI controls for start/stop etc. in each program and assign them to a key on your controller.

"What i actually wanted to know if all of this will be that piece of cake biting into which you loose all of your teeth" - yes one could lose all their teeth but it all depends on how much knowledge you have about MIDI programming with your controller and your programs. If you dig in deep yes you can pull this off.

Thanks! I am going to dig deeper into this..it might take some time but lets see.

One humble request..is there anyone else like Belew that you know of? I am still trying to figure out his signal chain in the pic above but it has been of tremendous help!

Seems like you need something like this:
    http://www.keithmcmillen.com/products/12-step/
    or that:
    http://www.keithmcmillen.com/products/softstep/
since you got enough going on with your hands.

If it's at all possible or not - who knows!
Creating a live set is a very individual process depending on you music an most of all on your way of thinking.
There is no way round this but trying it out and tweaking your setup accordingly.

Just remember: simpler is always better. Less things to go wrong and to troubleshoot. Test the crap out of the rig, and pay close attention to your latency for the live stuff. I'd consider running just one sequencer, and this case I'd say Live (even though I'm a SONAR user) just because that's it's built for.
