I know a lot of ppl love Voxengo Span. But I always get a different readout compared to everything else every time I use it. Am I neglecting to set something up properly on it? I'm using it straight up default. For example the current proj Im working on, Ableton Spectrum, Ozone 5 & Fabfilter Pro Q all show similar waveforms with Spectrum being the most sensitive. They all show the track to be heavy on the low freqs. Meanwhile Span tilts more towards the upper freqs. Also, one of the instruments I soloed had the freq wave edge about 4k @ -72 on Spectrum but only 1.5k @ -72 on Span.

 

Can you post screenshots so we can see what you're talking about?

 

If you look at the fabfilter pro q 2. it shows you from 6db upto to 30Db Spectrum View (look at the top right). Don't get confused with that.

 

You can adjust the slope (dB/oct) in SPAN and Pro-Q/Q2. Click the Edit-button in SPAN. Default is 4.50 in the newer versions of SPAN (it used to be 3 on the older versions). Set it to zero in SPAN and Pro-Q/Q2 if you need to. Run some white noise through it and see what happens.

@baxter that's the thing, the whole curve just looks different. The upper ends are bumped up.

 

What's the slope (and "type" and "average time", etc) in SPAN? Click the edit button.

How can i know which are the resonant frequencies i've to cut down? I know to check the spectrum peaks and cutting narrow but every time i do bad decisions........

 

How's your room? The Spectrum view informs about the audio material, but it's sound is highly influenced by a room. If your room isn't good, your EQ-ing won't be either.
Besides that, cutting down spectrum peaks from a graphic is not the way. They're not 'bad' by default. Just treat an analyser as an informing tool, then listen to the mix and the individual tracks and make your changes. Not necessarily by using an EQ.
A well known method of finding & cutting away offending frequencies using an EQ: raise the gain of a specific band, sweep-through the sound or mix with the frequency dial. On finding the offending frequencies, take down the gain to a negative value and raise the Q. A typical sound or mix can have several of those 'notches'.
