First, there are a lot of products similar to this, but you picked the right one and trust me the premium u paid is worth it. The ones with a hard plastic back and a little foam dont help because the "filter" ends up reflecting the sound back into the mic. These need to be made of a dampening material thats also permeable, this is why the Reflexion casings are perforated.

I have the original Reflexion filter and it works great. Since my control room is also my vocal booth, I face the back of the mic/filter towards my computer and it reduces a lot of the room noise floor (by about 6-7db).

It also helps the vocalist's voice from bouncing around the room, and those that do bounce back have a hard time getting to the mic again.

On trick that I use often is, I slide the mic back and forth on the mount to find the right proximity effect. The filter helps because one of the side effects of mic distance is that it affects the "room to vocal" pickup ratio, since the filter reduces the room, I just get the proximity.

btw dont forget to take care of behind the vocalist too, I use a 2x4' 3" thick panel. (Sides dont matter as much if you use the right polar pattern shape)

I agree with th above assessments about the Rexflexion Pro is better then the other "knock offs"... I picked one up at a really good price on craigslist on the recommendation of a friend as I work in a lightly treated room, and have been doing a lot more vocal recording (with windows open etc).... This thing works great. You can "dial" in the amount of room you want by moving the mic up and down the bracket.... It really made a world of difference on the quality of vocals I was capturing. It also works great on acoustic guitar, and I have also used it on glockenspiel (!),....

A buddy of mine went for one of the "less" expensive solutions, and I could immediately determine a difference as mentioned above. I'm sure there are cheaper solutions, but there was some intelligent thought put into these, and while I haven't shot them all out against each other, I have been nothing but happy with the purchase!

wow, that seems like a decent price for the larger unit! I think I got mine ~$100 us, but it was used, and it was just the Reflexion Filter Pro, (these things are HEAVY, so make sure you have a strong mic stand, or sandbags etc.... otherwise you run the risk of it falling over and possibly damaging your mic or other gear in the area etc! )

I believe the Space filter has been redesigned.

yup, i think you are right, and it is larger, which would make it better for guitars and amps and whatnot.... Seriously, if anyone is working in an untreated room, or a barely treated room and trying to record acoustic instruments, whether voice, guitar, whatever, ... these products really do work.... I was skeptical at first, ..... no longer...

That's all fine, but nothing works as good as making a vocal booth, and it's neither that expensive nor hard to make. ;)

I had the original all metal silver one that was HUGE and had the effed up clamps... I loved it until I didn't, then I sold it... If you have a really reverberant room, the filter can be a life saver, absorbing side and rear reflections, but it still isn't exactly perfect, the most ideal situation for the filter would be with your back to an equally absorptive surface (say a wall of auralex pads or something), to create sort of a magic bubble of "as-good-as-it-can-be" isolation...

I have an isolation booth as well, one of the whisper rooms, it gets kind of a "boxy" sound. using both actually works ok. nothing within every situation is indeed perfect. But if you can pick up one of the filters for cheap, it's a decent investment. (and aforementioned panels behind go a ways as well.).. and you are right m2314, the clamps on it suck.....

Walk-in closets are the cheapest, unless you have a shopping-maniac gf/wife/bf/husband. Win/win in either case, ey?

That's great, but nothing works as good as booking a session at Abbey Road Studios, it's a bit expensive though ;)
