looking for suggestions on cheap monitor speakers to connect the output from my macbook to . I assume the only option is to go from
the headphone jack out ?

I've seen some Krk rokit 5 (pair x2) rp5g1 75w active near field monitors 2nd hand advertised at £100 ?
or maybe a single speaker would do me ? like the KRK Rokit RP5 G3 at £110 ...

anyone got any suggestions please ? i realise the budget is not going to get me anything seriously good but want something that will give me a fair
reflection of how the music really sounds and to have a break from headphones..

the monitors would be in the kitchen , by the laptop about 2 feet away

I've tested the JBL LSR305. They sound deep and clear. It's amazing they can be bought for around $250.00.

The reviews also speak greatly of them. If I were looking for something in that range I'd get them. One other monitor that is highly acclaimed is the Eris line of Presonus. Great bang for the buck they say.

 

I was going to suggest the JBL LSR305's as well. Great quality and very inexpensive. Google some reviews. You won't find many negative ones.
Down the line, if you need more bottom-end you can add the matching LSR310S Subwoofer. It's a beast!

Kitchen? laptop?
I have this (Marshall Stanmore) in my kitchen. It actually rocks (pun)!

If you are producing, get a good dedicated audio interface, good monitors (yes, save up for them. Don't buy cheap cause you can) and locate to a dedicated room and then treat your room a little.
