To anybody reading this buy a normal drive and a USB HDD caddy. WD external drives are crappy, just read the internet for tales of endless troubles. I've experienced it myself, the problem is with the encryption bridge. If you own one just smash the case and use it as a normal unencrypted drive and save yourself a lot of tears.

If you cannot fix the MFT ot the MBR (Master boot record) then recovery programs such as getdataback will allow you to view your files and copy them to a new location. This will not cause windows to go crazy because you are scanning the hard drive from within the program and it is analysing your drive in a different way.

I have had much success with this, perhaps a few files might be corrupted and not able to copy to a new location, but you never know, it might all be ok.

I have never not failed to get data off any hard drive, unless it's a complete mechanical failure. I can get data off drives even if they have a sort circuit. Never throw a drive away unless is a complete mechanical failure, and even then you can recover data from mechanical failure, but it would cost a fair bit to have that recovered professionally.

You should be able to find getdataback via google, there is a cracked version out there, just saying!
If you use getdataback and copy your data to a new location, you can then format the problem hard drive and move your data back onto it. There are also alternative programs similar to getdataback out there...

have you tried getting the HD installer (from WD) and re running it?? or even a system restore to an earlier time?? the second question is also the best solution imo.

This thread is funny, not because of the trouble you've been going through AviatOfficial, but because several years ago I went through a similar scenario with Seagate. Several of my brand-new internal Seagate HDs went belly-up. Seagate eventually made some placating mouth-noises and admitted it was their fault - an error in the HD's in/out code (iow the fault was in the HD and the fix involved delicately removing a HD board and recoding it with a Windows utility. Of course they did not reimburse me for my lost time and data that went down the toilet. Since then I've avoided Seagate like the plague.
