MIDI cable via audiointerface and audio cable.

for example SSL2+ as interface works.

Also still got my old JV 1080, but as it is a digital "rompler", I'd rather use the plugin version which is using the same samples. No need to record in real time, open multiple instances and so on.

In order to connect to it

Take any midi keyboard controller and set the output midi channel( 1 through 16)
Set that same midi channel "IN" on the JS 800.

Hook a midi cable from the OUT port on the Komplete keyboard then hook the other end to the "IN" midi port on the JS800
This will allow the keyboard to send midi data to the JS800 ( notes/control parameters)

On the output of the JS 800 ( Audio outputs) connnect those to a USB audio interface to your computer.

Or you can hook up a midi cable to the Js800 and have midi data go into it's "IN" midi port to test out the samples with some midi racks inside your DAW.

CC and MIDI cable into the audio interface, which can be different depending on the DAW you are using. Why mono output? JV1080 is stereo.

whatever you do, don't buy the super mega cheap midi to usb cables because sometimes they're made so cheaply they aren't able to transmit Sysex messages.

Also if you're getting old gear, you must find yourself a program like Sound diver or midiquest. much fun to tweak controls while you're recording your track.

a Mio 1x1 will work, but they aren't exactly cheap. Before spending money on that, you could look for a Midi interface used. Maybe get like 4x4 in out, which then only takes up the same 1 usb port on the computer. You don't want to spend ~$50 bucks to connect one rack unit, or you will have to disconnect to use another module. Not if you may buy more hardware (or already have it).

    Maybe this can help?[IMG]

You can also connect the MIDI keyboard to the PC with USB. Like this:

Oh, your TC audio interface hasn't got MIDI I/O? If you don't have MIDI on the audio interface... yes - you will need a USB to MIDI cable. Then it'll look like this:

    Cheers!

I'm using Steinberg MIDEX-3 USB to MIDI interface (almost 25 yo) for my outboard hardware. The driver works in Windows 10 and Linux. Maybe you can find it on the cheap somewhere. But if you have only one outboard synth, it's probably best to just use some cheaper USB to MIDI cable.

p.s. I like making diagrams. Can you tell?

Yes of course, if you want to play JV-1080 with Yamaha Motif live, not sequenced with your DAW. Doesn't Yamaha Motif have some kind of a sequencer...? If it does, maybe you can record some sequences into Yamaha and play JV-1080, but these hardware sequencers are often not very pleasant to use.

On many older synths, drums are placed on the MIDI channel 10 as per GM Standard. So you have to set your keyboard or DAW to MIDI channel 10 to play the drum kit. Maybe you could choose what channel to use for drums, but I'm sure they are on ch 10 by default on many sound modules of that time. If you don't succeed you will have to read the fine manual.

No, you don't need to change the MIDI channel on JV1080, it is set to have drums on ch 10 by default. You have to change your keyboard's channel, or your DAW's track MIDI channel from MIDI channel 1 to 10 to be able to play drums. But just to be sure, check the manual what they say about drums.

This is a direct link to the JV-1080 manual: https://static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/JV-1080_OM.pdf You can't use these things without at least checking the basics in the manual. I actually have it on my computer because I wanted to buy it years ago, but I gave up. But I did have a bunch of other sound modules, and a different Roland module and I still have some.

oh, I was wrong. JV has to be in "GM Mode" to have drums on ch 10 by default. I'm guessing it isn't in GM mode. When the "GM" LED is not lit, you should be able to choose a drum kit patch on Part 1 and play it on MIDI channel 1. There are MIDI basics on page 13 of the manual. A "Performance" consists of 16 "Parts", each Part can be a different patch on a different MIDI channel, by default they are ordered 1-16 in Performance presets and drums could be put on any of the 16 channels, but your best bet is still ch 10 as it was a kind of standard at the time.

You do get that your keyboard or DAW track you're recording on has to be set to the same MIDI channel you want to play on the JV1080? If you're not aware of that, you will be confused about what sound JV is playing. Your keyboard is probably set to MIDI ch 1, so JV is always playing whatever is set to play on MIDI ch 1. Try changing the MIDI channel on Yamaha Motif and see. You will be able to play all the "parts"-patches from 1-16 within the current "Performance" just by changing MIDI channels on Yamaha.

This is called multi-timbrality. You can have 16 different patches playing within one "Performance" on 16 different MIDI and audio channels. Many sound modules have 8 or more audio outputs so you could use this ability to mix 8 or more sounds with the outboard fx and a mixing console. I see JV1080 has 6 audio outputs, so you can play 3 stereo sounds and process them separately with the outboard hardware, or 6 mono sounds. 1 and 2 are "mix out" so these are like main stereo audio outputs. The rest of the outputs are additional outputs and can be utilised (most probably) by editing the output assignment of the parts in the JV performance's mixer, "perform" button...

    Cheers!

I can almost feel the "eureka" moment happening there...

Well, I've just started DSP56300's Vavra and enjoying playing with it. This multi-timbrality is one of the things I really love about it, so I can play 16 sounds all at once, on 16 different MIDI channels, and have *only one GUI open* the whole time. No need to close-open-close-open... :) mzlti-timbral synths are great! Not to mention this way it uses 15 times less resources. I really wish there were more multi-timbral capable synths like Vavra and Osirus available as plugins.

The problem is - not many people know how MIDI works any more... and that there are 16 channels. :(
