So I was pretty indifferent to the tools and generators that were coming up with regard to music, until now.

I friend of mine showed me suno ai, and I found udio through that. Stock musicians and the like will be dealt some damage in only a few months it looks like. Scary :wow:

Idk why I thought AI will never successfully threaten musicians.

I only first heard of UDIO a few days ago. I went by their site and decided to quickly browse the legalese pages. Interesting, and it helped further my impression of the world of problems there will be with this stuff. Seems like they own the rights to whatever you create on their app. I only browsed it quickly, and reading it real carefully might lead to a somewhat different impression, but that's the quick gist I got of it. Raises interesting questions like, if you "create" a song using AI, who is the songwriter? Who owns the rights? What, if anything, did you actually 'create'?

This is why I keep thinking while its interesting what you can do with these AI apps, its all going to get bogged down for years attempting to delineate questions like that. I suspect lawyers are going to make out very well with AI.

I'm not a lawyer, but here's how things seem to be so far:
copyright is tied to human author, which AI isn't, and you aren't either because prompt is not something you can copyright,
nobody owns the rights because there is nothing to own,
using AI, you're not creating in sense of copyright, and ownership from using third-party online services that cannot generate exactly same result from exactly same prompt cannot be legally disputed either,

all those tools are cool, do have a fun and try, but definitely don't base your business on those, and don't pay more than you'd pay for going to a pub for a beer...

a possible felony violation of copyright, lawfare is real. corporations have an economic leverage over most individuals.

possibly good taste, history if you have heard good music, you may find infinite mediocrity a painful substitute. however many were raised on elevator music and will likely find it "nonthreatening" and therefore "pleasant".

    fair point,
some people prefer going to live gigs and concerts, and some like elevator/background music,
either way, Spotify is falling into mediocrity as well, being only a platform not really supporting artists in any way either

It's beginning to leak slowly that whilst the AI generation of a song is impressive, Udio appears to have potentially stolen copyrighted music to inform their tool to the point where they've disabled "Manual Mode", shredding the evidence, and removing tracks people are discovering are blatant rips generated on existing copyrighted music. Suno AI is apparently likely to have done the same thing and are also disabling certain features.

AI would be by far better used in tools to help music creation, e.g. help with arrangement and so on rather than just doing the whole process.

Actually, not to be disrespectful, but I do have a background in law and IMO, you're off base. Your presumptions about how it works would be very nice if you happen to be a big proponent of AI musical composition and would like everyone playing with this stuff to be allowed to do whatever they please. However, your conclusions aren't realistic under the circumstances or the law. This is particularly true since so much of AI music is based on 'scraping' the work of others who own the rights to their own written material, their image, their sound or voice, etc.

Let me give you an example. If I write a song and then record it, proper copyrighting would actually consist of two separate copyrights. One for having written the composition, the other for the recording itself. You see, it's not about "human authors", what it's really about is ownership, or put a bit differently, who actually owns the work. It seems you would like to say nobody owns it, a machine created it so just have fun, but in realistic legal terms it's not that simple, and it's where the future of AI will be bogged down in court cases and a lot of debate. This is why you come across so many people on sites like this that say F copyright!, and kill all copyrights, and on. They'd like to do whatever they feel like doing and that's not going to happen unless a lot of laws get tossed, which is highly unlikely.

Since most of the AI musical compositions we're currently hearing have "borrowed" the work of others (for example, AI that cops the sound of a famous singer's voice based on scraping their recordings), questions of ownership do arise, and in this instance become very complicated. When I listened to some songs on UDIO, I immediately recognized the voices of some well known singers. That singer should have some rights, but at the same time UDIO seems to be claiming ownership. However, that "claim", realistic or not, will also get them named in a lawsuit! Like I began by saying, questions of who created what, who owns it, who is the author, who is the singer, all these issues will be raised and it will be a long, long time till its all settled. Until that happens, people should be very wary of using these tools, especially if they attempt to commercialize on the product that's created with them, because they could turn around at a later date and be told they owe someone a lot of money when they thought all they were doing was having some 'fun'.

Well, I have no background in law, but if I have understood the terms correctly, here is a brief summary:
Udio authorises the user to do whatever the user wants with the output. Both commercial and non-commercial. However, Udio reserves the right to use both your input and the generated output for research and development purposes. At the same time, by using Udio, you waive the right to take civil action against Udio.
Based on the last point alone, I would advise anyone NOT to use Udio's output for commercial purposes. I could imagine that the licence holders of the original training data will at some point approach users with warning letters if a link to copyrighted material can be established from the generated output and this output is used commercially. And Udio is already trying to get out of the affair in advance with the waiver clause. So be careful.

singer's voice isn't copyrighted, and artist's/composer's style isn't copyrighted either,
finding patterns in recordings is about as illegal as trying to play guitar as your favourite guitarist, or compose music with subconscious author in mind - there's a borderline on what's acceptable, but it happens,
I agree using any AI tools to make money is very questionable at the moment, but it won't take long and some kind of AI-misused-work will be everywhere, as it's already quite difficult to tell what results are AI and which aren't or whether certain piece of software or plugin uses AI or was made using AI,
there's no way any huge lawsuits would happen, because huge tech companies (nVidia, Microsoft, Apple, Meta...) are already so involved they can't even think about paying anyone recursively or slowing down the development

to be clear, I'm not advocating for AI, just stating my opinion on what seems inevitable :dunno:
